The Wiseco John Penton GNCC Women’s Race ReportJuly 10, 2020Round seven of the 2020 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place June 27th and 28th in Millfield, OH, with The Wiseco John Penton GNCC. The Penton is one of the oldest rounds on the series circuit, with a ton of history as well as lots of existing trail to work with when building the track. The ground here is the classic southern Ohio red clay – slippery when wet, slippery when dry, and amazingly tacky and rutted when conditions are perfect.
Tuesday Toolbox: Rich/Dickerson FamilyJuly 7, 2020GNCC Racing has always been a family sport, accessible to all ages. However, the Rich/Dickerson family, from Warsaw, Ohio, takes that to an extreme, with six GNCC ATV racers spread across three generations. The oldest, Kenny Rich SR, races in the Golden Masters (60+) class and is currently third in points. His two children are both racers as well: his son, Kenny Rich JR still races intermittently, in either Sportsman or Vet B. His daughter Amy and her husband, Dustin Dickerson, are former racers, but both stepped back from their own racing so that their children Raelynn and Bryson Dickerson could begin. They race in the MXC1 (5th in points) and MXC2 (4th in points) classes, respectively. I spoke primarily with Amy and Dustin, but also talked to Kenny and the Dickerson kids as well about their mutual passion for GNCC racing.
Tuesday Toolbox: Brycen NealJune 30, 2020Brycen Neal took home the overall win at The Wiseco John Penton this weekend. It’s his second win in a row here, his first win of the season, and for the Ohio native, it’s always nice to win in front of the home state crowd. Though he had a rough start to the season with a 12th place at Big Buck, he still sits second in points.
Dunlop High Point Youth Bike Race ReportJune 26, 2020Round six of the 2020 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place June 13th and 14th in Mount Morris, PA, with the High Point GNCC. This is the third year the GNCC series has hosted a race on or near the High Point motocross track property. Though the famed track was not used in the race, there is plenty of woods and fields on the property that were put to excellent use. With plenty of elevation change, mostly in the form of short up-and-down climbs, frequent jumps out of the woods into the faster grasstrack sections, and enough tree roots and rock to be slightly technical but not too difficult, High Point was a very enjoyable race.

Tuesday Toolbox: Brody JohnsonJune 23, 2020The South Carolina based Johnson brothers have always been standouts in the GNCC series, but Brody Johnson is having an exceptional season even by those standards. He’s leading the 250A class and has won every Amateur Overall so far this season. He hopes to have a perfect season, something no other rider has accomplished yet. Either way, he’s certainly a rider to watch and the current favorite for Top Amateur this season.
Tuesday Toolbox: Ricky RussellJune 16, 2020Ricky Russell was showing a lot of promise heading into the 2020 season. His switch to the Coastal Racing/Husqvarna team seemed to be agreeing with him, judging from the second and third place finishes he earned at the first two rounds. Unfortunately, he had a massive crash at the Bulldog GNCC, severing his femoral artery and breaking his hip. He got to the hospital in time to save both his life and his leg, but he is facing a long road to recovery. We talked about the new team, his season up until now, the injury itself, and when we can expect to see him back on the starting line at a GNCC.
FMF Camp Coker Bullet: Youth ATV Race ReportJune 16, 2020Round five of the 2020 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place May 16th and 17th in Society Hill, with the Camp Coker Sportsman preserve. In addition to the race, the facility features a swimming hole with a rope swing and zip line, plus a fishing rodeo on Saturday night. The terrain at Camp Coker is a mix of sandy and swampy, with a smattering of tree roots thrown in for good measure. It also tends to be one of the faster rounds in the series.

Tuesday Toolbox: Josh StrangJune 9, 2020After signing his first pro contract in 2007, Josh Strang has become one of the veteran riders in the XC1 Open Pro class at the GNCC races. Strang has earned one National Championship, back in 2010, but is looking to make a statement this year. Strang earned the FMF Camp Coker Bullet GNCC overall win on May 31, and sits just 23 points being Kailub Russell in the hunt for the Championship.
