FMF Camp Coker Bullet: Youth ATV Race Report
Cox and McCormick win Camp Coker Bullet

Round five of the 2020 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place May 16th and 17th in Society Hill, with the Camp Coker Sportsman preserve. In addition to the race, the facility features a swimming hole with a rope swing and zip line, plus a fishing rodeo on Saturday night. The terrain at Camp Coker is a mix of sandy and swampy, with a smattering of tree roots thrown in for good measure. It also tends to be one of the faster rounds in the series.

Though there was no rain on race weekend, rain earlier in the week did plenty of damage. The sand was wet and deep, with random sinkholes forming throughout the trail. The youth riders bypassed the worst of the mud, but there were still some spots where they had to be careful to avoid getting stuck. Besides the woods, the track contained fast access roads, grass tracks and a sandy moto track as well. Temperatures were much milder than the previous race, with temperatures in the mid-70s. Out of the 81 riders in the youth ATV race, Tyler Cox was the overall winner, while Ryder McCormick took his first overall finish in the 37-rider micro ATV race – from the third row!

Tyler Cox took a dominant win in YXC1, leading from the first lap to the last. Likewise, Charlie Stewart spent the entire race in second place, but finished several minutes down from Cox. On the other hand, third-place Landen Ostrich had a rough day ahead of him, battling his way all the way up from a 10th place on lap one to earn his first podium finish this season. Between Cox’s win and the fact that the previous YXC1 points leader Nick Dearing DNF’d this round, the YXC1 points standings have been shaken up quite a bit – Stewart now leads, with Cox in second, and the ever-consistent Morgan Johnson in third. When asked about his race, Cox told us: “Camp Coker has always been one of my favorite places to race. I had a decent start this time and quickly got into the lead. I was able to hold my position for all six laps and take home the win.”

In YXC2, there was a new face on top of the box! It looked at first like Ty McGaughey was going to be battling for another win, moving into the lead on lap three, but with both Bryson Lee and Brody Pullen mere seconds behind. McGaughey encountered problems the following lap though, dropping back to eighth and then not completing any more laps. This left Lee and Pullen to duke it out for the win. Pullen took the lead on lap four, and slowly gapped Lee, though the two riders finished thirty seconds apart. Tavin Cook rounded out the podium, and was the last YXC2 rider to remain on the lead lap.

The overall non-YXC rider in the ATV youth race was Bryce Pullen (YAM), racing in the 125 JR (8-11) class. He placed 11th overall.

In MXC1, Kaleb Shay earned his first win this season! He started out the race in fourth, dropped back to fifth, then rebounded and took the lead. Khyler Davis wasn’t letting a win escape her without a fight though and the two battled furiously the last half of the race. In the end, Shay came out on top by just over a second. Bodie Buckhannon finished third, after spending most of the day hovering near that position. After Camp Coker, Davis and Buckhannon are tied for the lead in the points, with Brayden Cox in third.

Although Shay was the winner in MXC1, it was Ryder McCormick, racing in the 90 Stock class, who took the overall win. When asked about his race, he said “I got the holeshot with my parking brake on then I remembered to turn it off in the middle of the first lap. I caught up to the class in front of me and then kept going. I ended up first overall and first in class, so I say that’s good!”

Reed Stevens and Kody Buckhannon also had a pretty good battle going in MXC2, though the bulk of their racing took place early in the race rather than toward the end. Stevens started out in front, but Buckhannon was always nearby, and ended up taking the lead on lap three. Stevens passed him back the following lap though, and a mistake the lap after that sealed Buckhannon’s fate. Noah Slocum took advantage of his mistake to catch back up, though Slocum was unable to make a pass, finishing right behind Buckhannon in third.

Obviously the fastest overall non-MXC rider was Ryder McCormick (HON). After him, the next fastest non-MXC rider in the Micro ATV race was Jase Strouse, racing in the 50 SR (6-7) class. He finished 11th overall.

Round six of the series will take place on June 13th and 14th in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, with the High Point GNCC. ATV, Micro and eBike racing will take place on Saturday, while Bike racing will take place on Sunday.
