For the first time in its 50-year history, GNCC heads to Alabama for the all-new Talladega GNCC, held on the grounds of the world-famous Talladega Superspeedway. While Talladega is known far and wide for hosting NASCAR events on the asphalt 2.66-mile oval, the facility is no total stranger to dirt as not only do they have a dirt short track on site, but back in 1984 Talladega also hosted the sixth round of the Supercross season.
However, this marks the first-time an off-road racing event has visited Talladega and while you won’t be going wide open down “The Alabama Gang Superstretch” inside the speedway, this still promises to be a really exciting and fun event. While this is uncharted territory for GNCC regulars, but Alabama still hosts its fair share of off-road races with numerous hare scramble and enduro events held across the state, so expect some of the top local talent who may not contest GNCC events regularly to come try their hand at Talladega.
The dirt here will be mostly red clay similar to Georgia or North Carolina but with some loamy brown dirt mixed in as well. Expect to be in the woods for a majority of the racecourse, and starting with a blank slate for the racecourse means this first stop there will be a bit on the tighter and twisty side as the pine trees grow really close together where we’ll be racing.
The track crew will be making an early pre-trip down to start working on the facility before the season starts, so we’ll be sure to update with the latest report from the woods when that time comes. Until then, you can expect lots of excitement to build around this event and don’t forget to break out all your Ricky Bobby or Dale Earnhardt gear for this one!
