Jonathan Johnson has shown himself as the guy to beat in the 200-A ranks. The South Carolina native has had an excellent 2014 season this far with 5 wins which gives him a solid class points lead. We caught up with Jonathan to talk about his 2014 season and more.

GNCCRacing.com:  How's it going today?
Jonathan Johnson: It’s been pretty good! Just got off work, so that’s pretty nice (laughs)

So tell everyone a little about yourself.
Well, I’m Jonathan Johnson. I’m 17, from Landrum, South Carolina. I race the 200-A class on a YZ125, and that’s just about it!

How did you get started racing?
I started racing when I was 5 years old. It’s kind of a typical story, my dad and his brothers always raced, so I grew up around racing, so of course I ended up getting into it too.

And what brought you into the world of GNCC Racing?
The GNCCs are known to have the best riders, so it’s the place to be for sure. I raced my first full season on a 65 and ended up 2nd behind Grant Baylor.

You've been having a pretty good 2014 season; tell us how it's been going.
Yeah, my season has gone pretty good. I’ve had a few problems like brakes going out and stuff, but other than that, it's been good. I'm just trying to survive the 3 hour races (laughs)

How does it feel to hold the 200-A class points lead?
It feels great for sure, but we have 4 more to go and everyone wants to win. It’s a long way from over and anything can still happen.

What's it going to take to maintain that lead through the final rounds and come away with a championship?
It’s just going to take a lot of hard work, and to twist the throttle harder (laughs) Also, getting into top notch shape would be a big help as well.

What do you hope to accomplish through the rest of the 2014 season?
I just want to come away with the 200-A championship, but an overall amateur finish would be nice. Of course, those guys are definitely on top of their game, so it’s pretty tough to do.

Have you given any thought to what you want to do for 2015?
No, not really. I’ve tossed around the idea of moving to a 250 in the 250-A class and hope to find some success there.

What about beyond the next couple of seasons? What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
I’d definitely like to snag a few overall amateur finishes before eventually moving to the XC2 class for a while and just kind of see where things go from there.

Alright, before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank?
I’d like to think Dwayne at Atlas Cycles, Mad Man Cleaning Solutions,  Sunstar, Stickman Graphics, G2, Fly Racing and of course a big thanks to my dad.
