Zack Ponder Race Report - Steele Creek

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 | 9:40 AM

Just wanted to thank everyone for a great weekend. Round 3 of our GNCC schedule took us to Steele Creek, and believe me, I was ready to get back to racing after the bad luck at Georgia. I put on my new Fly Racing gear, climbed on my Obermeyer Yamaha/Raines Riding University/OffroadViking.com race team YZ 85 and headed to the line with 32 other racers.

Finally, TEEEEEEEN Seconds and Ricky Towery waves that all-important green flag! first kick and just like Whibs, I had the holeshot. I lead most of the 1st lap but took a bad line and dropped back to 4th. After regrouping the next 2 laps I found myself in 3rd, right behind 2nd and 40 seconds off 1st. After getting the 2 lap board I went into the mudhole in 3rd and took a better line where I was able to get to 2nd. Might have had something to do with the Flat Tire Defenders in my brand new Kenda tires, just saying, as they was spinning, the Kenda hooked up!

As we got the white flag, I had worked to get within 15 seconds of 1st. I knew I would have to take the chance at the mudhole to get myself in position to win. Dad showed me the line, and Yamaha, Kenda and willpower put me on the otherside right on his back wheel. We stayed like that until we come out in the field and that's when I made my move, but got tangled with a lapper and just couldn't get the pass done. We banged bars and raced eachother clean and it was just one of those learning moments. I ended up 2nd, about half a second off 1st and 5th overall out of 169 riders. It's hard being that close and not winning but I'm happy to have at least been able to put myself in position to win.

Just like to thank Obermeyer Yamaha/RainesRiding University/OffroadViking.com Race Team, FlyRacing, FMF, Kenda Tires, Flat Tire Defenders, XBRAND GOGGLES, Enduro Engineering, GE, HBD Graphics, IMS, and everyone that continues to support our team. Also thanks to Randy Hawkins for allowing me to train with all the AMPRO guys and gals! Oh yea, thanks to Ryan, Jim and Ms. Gail for letting me stay with them Spring Break and going with Ryan to CrossFit training. My team mate Cody Ruckle was injured Sunday during the race so lete keep hin in our prayers, along with Digital Dave's daughter Cheynne. Awesome track this weekend GNCC, so thanks to ya'll too for having the best series in the world. And sorry but I got to thank Sonny Morabito for keeping my bike in tip top shape.
