2018 GNCC UTV Competition Rules

Revised: 4.16.18

The following rules and regulations are solely applicable to Grand National Cross Country events. Please direct all questions and inquiries to Racer Productions, Inc. All decisions by Racer Productions are final. 

A. GENERAL:

  1. Schedule:
    UTV/SS racing will be conducted on Saturday at 6 Select Events Only.(Please refer to the Series Schedule for events.) 
  2. Race Length:
    The UTV race will be a (1) hour race starting at 4:00 pm, or as soon thereafter as possible. The Single Seat (SS) race will be a (30-45) minute race following the Youth ATV race, or as soon thereafter as possible.
  3. Minimum Age Requirement:
    • UTV competitors (drivers and passengers) must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the event.
    • Single Seat competitors must be at least 16 years of age at the time of the event.
  4. UTV Teams: Competitors must register as a Team. A Team consists of a driver and a passenger. Teams may switch passenger from event to event, but not during an event.
  5. Drivers are responsible for the actions of their entire pit crew.
  6. Teams will be disqualified for driving on a GNCC course during the 7 days prior to the first day of the event.
  7. GNCC Racing does not provide medical insurance for competitors, and we urge you not to compete without it. Medical insurance is the sole responsibility of the competitor and Passenger.

B. COMPETITOR ELIGIBILITY AND CLASSIFICATION:

  1. UXC1 Pro Turbo: The following drivers are eligible, but not required to compete in the UXC1 class:
    a. Top 10 overall drivers from previous year's GNCC; and
    b. By Promoter Discretion.
  2. UXC2 Pro: The following drivers are eligible, but not required to compete in the UXC2 class:
    a. Top 30 overall drivers from previous year's GNCC; and
    b. By Promoter Discretion.
  3. UXC3 Pro-Am: The following drivers are eligible, but not required to compete in the XC3 Pro-Am class:
    a. Drivers placing 20-50 overall the previous year; and
    b. By promoter discretion.
    c. Former GNCC, TORC, Best-In-The-Desert (BITD), SCORE and WORCS UTV national champions in the past 5 years are not eligible for the Pro-Am class.
  4. Promoter Discretion: To apply for approval to compete in a class pursuant to Promoter Discretion, riders must submit a Race Resume outlining their race experience and accomplishments, with references, to [email protected]. Race Resumes should be submitted no less than two weeks prior to the event for which approval is sought.

C. MACHINE ELIGIBILITY AND CLASSIFICATION:

  1. Production Rule: OEM motor and matching frame combination 4-wheel drive model required (matching year NOT required).  Frame geometry must remain as designed by the OEM, including all suspension pivot points on the original equipment frame.  All A-arm mounting points must remain in the stock location and position as delivered from the manufacturer, however they may be reinforced for strength.
  2. UXC1 Pro Turbo: (0-1000cc) UTV Production models, with matching OEM turbo and motor combination. Engine and suspension modifications permitted.  Naturally Aspirated & GNCC approved Factory Installed (OEM) Turbochargers are permitted, along with OEM designed turbocharger upgrade systems available through OEM dealers, i.e., Yamaha GYTR turbo kit.
  3. All other UTV Classes: (0-1000cc) UTV Production models. Engine and suspension modifications permitted. Turbo/superchargers are NOT permitted; Naturally Aspirated engines only.
  4. Single Seat:(0-1000cc) SS Production models. Engine and suspension modifications permitted.

D. EQUIPMENT:

  1. Machine Width:
    UTV machine width can be a maximum 64 inches (with 1” variance);
    SS machine width can be a maximum 64 inches.
  2. The following equipment is required for all machines:
    a. Full roll cage;
    b. Window-nets of adequate design and size so as to prohibit extension of extremities (i.e., arm, hand, leg) beyond cab of vehicle;
    c. Door panels covered by sheet metal;
    d. Silencer/Muffler;
    e. Fully functioning Fire Extinguisher clearly mounted and easily retrievable by officials/the public; and
    f. Master shut-off switch that disconnects all electrical power and kills the engine must be labeled and located on the left/driver side of the dash accessible by rescue personnel. The master shut-off switch must be easily identifiable.
  3. The following gear is required for all competitors:
    a. Four-point harness restraints, securely fastened on both occupants at all times;
    b. Protective eyewear;
    c. Fireproof helmet or fireproof balaclava (head sock);
    d. Fire-proof gloves; and
    e. SFI 3.2/5 Dual-layer fire suit (1 or 2-piece jacket/pants), or an undergarment with a TPP value of 6 AND an SFI Single-layer fire suit (1 or 2-piece jacket/pants).
  4. All competitors with an assigned number must display their number on a number plate mounted on the rear of the machine.  Numbers shall be a minimum of 6-inch blocked numbers.  All numbers must be the same.
  5. Drivers contesting the series should comply with the number plate color code. (See, Class Chart).
  6. Rear tail/brake lights must remain on at all times.
  7. For the UXC1 and UXC2 classes only, no more than one (1) horn device per team is permitted for alerting competitors that are about to be overtaken. Horns must be activated by a button and not a switch. Air/electric horns are permitted; Sirens are prohibited. Horn volume and tone will be at the sole discretion of GNCC Racing. Otherwise, no horns, bells or other sound devices permitted in any class.
  8. Machine sound level cannot exceed 98 dB/A in accordance SAE J-1287 test procedures.
  9. Combustible engines only. No nitrous oxide or alcohol-based fuel permitted. Petroleum-based fuel only may be used. Fuel can only be carried inside the machine's fuel tank and must be stored in approved containers.
  10. Machines may be tested by officials any time prior to, during or after the event.

E. REGISTRATION:

  1. Due to the nature of the GNCC scoring system, a current AMA membership is required for all drivers, but not co-pilots.
  2. UXC1/UXC2 Pro drivers must receive a Start Permission from GNCC prior to registering for any event.
  3. Online pre-entry is required for UXC1 and UXC2 classes. For all other classes pre-entry is recommended.
  4. Pre-entered teams will receive starting grid priority. The starting grid will be posted in advance of the event. UTV event entries may be limited by GNCC.
  5. Pre-Entry closes midnight the Wednesday prior to each event. All drivers must check-in at Registration race day from 1:30 – 3 pm.
  6. Teams must register for the race before operating their machine anywhere on the facility. Drivers may not exceed 5 mph when traveling to/from their pit area, and occupants must always wear a helmet.
  7. Teams will be registered under the name of the Driver. Both the driver and the passenger must be present at registration and sign all required forms and releases.
  8. Teams must obtain a transponder. Transponders can be purchased or rented at each event. For best results, mount the unit on the front hood or front of the roll cage. It is recommended that transponders be mounted in front of the engine. Transponders have a 2-year battery life from the date printed on the unit. Once the unit fails to read at Tech Inspection, or exceeds the battery life, Teams must purchase/rent a new unit.
  9. Teams will receive two numbered Scoring Tags. Place the white numbered tags on the roll cage bars; place the colored tag on the back of the machine directly behind the driver’s head on the roll cage.
  10. Technical Inspection: All machines and competitor helmets must report to Technical Inspection prior to racing for the purpose of inspecting proper use/placement of: helmets, fire suits, fire extinguisher, harness restraints, Master Shut-off Switch, window nets, transponder functionality, Scoring Tag, and number assignment. Safety equipment and machine eligibility are the sole responsibility of the Team. Technical Inspection will be held Race Day from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at a designated location.
  11. UTV team members and SS competitors may compete in either the ATV, Bike (excluding XC1/XC2 Pro Bike classes) or UTV/SS races.

F. START PROCEDURE:

  1. Start Rows will consist of no more than 10 units; Rows may be split between classes.
  2. Teams will be assigned a Start Row in advance. Teams shall line up on their assigned row when directed by the race official. No one is permitted on the Start Line until authorized.
  3. For the first round only, the Top 10 finishers from the previous year’s class standings will be placed in the first two rows designated for that class.  For the balance of the series, the Top 10 in current class point standings will be placed in the first two rows designated for that class.  The remainder of the rows will be assigned based on random assignment, with priority given to Teams registering online in advance. Teams must start on assigned rows and may not elect to change rows.
  4. Drivers Meeting will be conducted on the Start Line before the start of each race.  All competitors are responsible for attending.
  5. The start of the race will be dead engine, as follows:
    a. Teams will start from their designated row;
    b. The Official will throw the green flag signaling the start of the row;
    c. Rows will start approximately 30 seconds apart.
  6. Teams starting before the green flag signal will be penalized.
  7. The machine a Team leaves the Start Line with is the official machine of the Team for that event, and may not be switched during the event. 

G. THE COURSE:

  1. A UTV course will generally be between 3-4 miles in length, and may include trails, footpaths, roads, hills, motocross tracks, or any type of terrain which can be negotiated by a UTV. The SS course will generally be between 2-3 miles in length.
  2. The course will be marked with arrows pursuant to the following color chart:

  3. Pre-race course inspection is available race day and the day prior to race day. Competitors are permitted to walk or bicycle the course only; Non-throttle pedal assist cycles are permissible for this purpose.
  4. Marking, cutting, tampering with or otherwise changing the course in any manner is strictly prohibited. Course modifications may only be made by an official.
  5. No one, except officials and drivers officially entered, may drive on the race course at any time during the event.
  6. Teams will be disqualified for driving on a GNCC course during the 7 days prior to the first day of the event.

H. SCORING:

  1. Transponder scoring is the official scoring procedure for GNCC.
  2. There will be one checkpoint at the Finish Line.  Machines must come to a complete stop at the Finish Line checkpoint.  The section from the Finish Line to the Finish Line checkpoint is a "No Passing" zone.
  3. Teams may not be serviced or pitted in the area between the Finish Line and the Finish Line checkpoint, or in the area immediately after the Finish Line checkpoint.

I. ON TRACK REGULATIONS:

  1. The race course is CLOSED for this event. Race fans and crew members are prohibited from entering the woods or otherwise accessing the race course. Viewing areas will be available at the Finish Line Area or as designated by race officials.
  2. Speed Zones may be posted in specified areas and will be enforced.
  3. Riders must remain on the marked course. The marked course is within 25 feet of race arrows. However, riders must stay within the confines of the following markers: Double Striped Placards posted on both sides of the trail, ribbons, signs, stakes, hay bales, barrels, motocross track, grass track, etc.. 
  4. Teams encountering a traffic jam or bottleneck may go more than 25 feet off the course to get around the bottleneck only. However, the Team must re-enter the course as soon as possible, and upon approaching this section the next lap, must drive the original arrowed section if the track is clear. If the original marking devices are knocked down, the Team must stay on the original marked course regardless. A "bottleneck" is a section of the track that becomes impassable for any reason, with the exception of checkpoints.
  5. Machines may not cut to the inside of a white pole corner marker.
  6. If a machine leaves the course for any reason it must re-enter where it left the course.
  7. Teams may make repairs and otherwise receive mechanical assistance anywhere along the course from anyone.  All such repairs and assistance must be made without causing interference with other competitors and in a suitable area off the racetrack. 
  8. Internal Radio communication is permitted between drivers and passengers, but not between driver/passengers and pit crew members. 
  9. Reckless Driving. No driver may operate his machine in such a manner as to endanger life or limb of other competitors, officials or the public.  Drivers will be penalized for the reckless operation of their machine, including but not limited to the deliberate ramming, blocking or intentional contact with another Team, or for running into an official.  Competitors are solely responsible for their own safety.
  10. Team Tactics are prohibited, and include but are not limited to: altering the race course, marking the race course, blocking course lines, blocking drivers, allowing another rider to pass in order to affect the outcome of the race, or exchanging machines in order for another driver to continue the race. Drivers, team members or spectators involved will be penalized, including but not limited to disqualification, removal and suspension from GNCC. 
  11. Unsportsmanlike Conduct. Persons whose appearance, conduct, associations or affiliations, on or off the track, deemed harmful or not conducive to the best interest of the sport or who exhibit conduct which is inappropriate, offensive, abrasive or in bad taste, may be excluded or suspended from GNCC at the discretion of the Race Director.

    Competitors engaged in any event, public appearance, media activity or any other situation relating to their participation in the series must refrain from intentional physical contact with any participant, inappropriate or profane language, fraud, and unsportsmanlike behavior. At the sole discretion of GNCC, competitors who exhibit behaviors deemed inappropriate or unsportsmanlike, prejudicial or detrimental to the best interests of the sport, or detract from the enjoyment, appreciation or interests of the fans, sponsors or other supporters of the sport, may be penalized by monetary fine, docking of championship points, or both. Such penalties are not subject to protest or appeal.

J. RACE FINISHES:

  1. The race officially ends for all contestants at the completion of the lap in which the checkered flag is displayed to the winner.
  2. To be considered as having completed a lap, the driver and his machine must cross the plane of the checkered flag under the machine’s unaided ability.
  3. Towing is not allowed. Teams whose disabled vehicles are towed back to the pit area by staff or otherwise, for any reason, are not eligible to return to competition. Any laps earned by a Team that returns to competition after receiving a tow back to the pit area will be removed.  If a Team desires to repair their machine and return to the competition, they must decline the offer to tow their vehicle back to the pit area. This rule does not apply to racers towed only a short distance in order to dislodge the vehicle from a track obstacle (i.e., mud pit, deep rut, ravine, etc.).
  4. Teams will be scored in order of their finish and number of laps completed.  It is not necessary to complete all laps in order to receive a score. 
  5. Podium: The Top 3 Overall, regardless of class, then the UXC2, UXC3 and Women’s class winners will be recognized on the podium for each race. 
  6. Burnouts on the podium are prohibited. Violation of this provision will result in a penalty, including but not limited to fine and/or disqualification. 
  7. Results: Teams have 30 minutes to finish the race after the overall winner takes the checkered flag.  A Team may question the results within the 30-minute period following posting of the final results. After 30 minutes, awards will be given out and results will be final unless a protest is pending. 
  8. Impound: If directed, the top three overall teams, as well as any other team requested by an official to do so, must leave their machines at a designated impound area until released by the official.
  9. Protests must be in writing and specify the grounds for the protest.  In the case of a protested part, GNCC reserves the right to impound any parts or components necessary to resolve the protest in question. Impounded parts will be returned pending resolution of any protest.
  10. Penalties will be assessed at the discretion of the official based on the severity of the offense, and may include one or more of the following: position(s), lap(s), time adjustment, disqualification, suspension, loss of championship points, fine, probation, etc.
  11. Awards are given at the rate of 1 per 3 team entries, with a minimum of 5 awards per class. To win an award, a team must complete 50% of the laps of the class winner.  One award will be given per team.

K. NATIONAL CLASS CHAMPIONSHIPS:

For the UXC1/UXC2 Pro classes only, all events will count towards the National Class Championship.

UXC1 Pro Class ranking shall be consistent with the Overall National ranking, exclusive of teams in other classes (See below).

For all other classes, National Class Championships will be determined by a Team’s best finish in a minimum number of 5 events.  A Team must enter a minimum of 5 events in order to be eligible for series awards and national class ranking.  The minimum number of events does not have to be in the same class.

Ties: Ties for the Class Championship will be broken by the most first place finishes, then by the best finish in the final race of the season if necessary. Ties for other class positions will be broken by the best finish in the final race of the season.

L. NATIONAL POINT SCALE:

UXC1 Pro and UXC2 Pro Class Championship and Overall National Number points will be earned per event as follows:

M. NATIONAL OVERALL NUMBER ASSIGNMENT:

The electronic scoring system provides a complete overall race finish for each event. Points will be accumulated for National Number assignment and can be viewed as a gage toward overall ranking for the year.

National Overall Numbers will be assigned based on overall points earned and will be awarded to the top 20 overall first, regardless of the number of events entered, then to the remaining teams based on overall finish in at least 5 and as many as 6 events. The minimum number of events does not have to be in the same class.

The Overall Series Champion will be awarded the National Overall Number 1 plate and shall be required to display the Number 1 plate the next season.

Ties: Ties in the top 20 National Numbers will be broken by the most first place finishes, then by the most second place finishes, etc., if necessary. Ties for remaining national numbers will be broken by the higher overall finish in the final race of the season.
