GNCCRacing.com: Let’s go back to the beginning. What was your first bike/ATV? When did you start racing? What was your first GNCC?
Cole Lykins: My dad bought me my first quad (a CanAm 50) when I was 4 years old. My brother and I would just ride around the house and on the trails in our woods. Just randomly in 2019 - we went with some friends to a mid-season IXCR and I raced a CanAm 70 in blue jeans, a t-shirt and cowboy boots. I ended up getting 6th overall in Intermediate and have been chasing it ever since! The following year would have been my first full season at IXCR and I competed in my first GNCC race the fall of 2020 at Mountaineer in YXC2 on a 150.
Over this past weekend, you had an absolute MONSTER day. Finishing first in the 250 All Stars class, but more importantly finishing first in the overall. It’s been a few days now, have you had time to process everything?
Thank you. Yes, Im definitely grateful it all came together! I had hopes of getting an overall at some point this season. It was a goal of mine coming into this year and it has been what I have been working towards- so to be able to make that happen is awesome. So many riders and their teams put in the hard work but it doesn't always get to show because of other factors - so Im very thankful it all came together for my team and I and it definitely makes all the hard work worth it.
What was clicking for you Saturday? Were you getting pit boards that told you where you were in the overall, or was it just a battle between you and Andrew Smallwood that drove the results?
Yes- I was getting pit boards that said I was 3rd OA on the first lap and then the laps following my boards were letting me know I was gaining on the leader Cody. I knew if I kept pace, I would have a shot at the overall so I just put my head down and went for it.
You’ve been pretty sensational so far this year. But the one race you were off the box was Florida. Was that motivating heading into Camp Coker, knowing you gave up a podium in the first sandy round? A little redemption if you will.
Thanks Mikey. Yes, Florida was a tough one for sure. Unfortunately, my quad was having electrical issues from the start. I had a 4 min get off the first lap - I had thought the problem was with the air filter so I stopped to clean it out and roll on. I worked my way back to lead my class but ended up breaking down 3 miles into the last lap. As frustrating as that was, Im grateful we had the opportunity to get the electrical issues figured out and my machine could be dialed in moving forward. And yes- happy to get redemption in the sand!
The new 250 All-Star class isn’t a big class, but it’s absolutely stacked with big names coming out of the Youth ranks. Of the 9 riders who have raced the class this year, I’d say just about every one of them is capable of winning. The results obviously speak to themselves to this point. But how do you feel you stack up against the competition? It’s a long season, and we’re just getting warmed up.
Yeah, you are right. I was a little surprised at the amount of riders in that class from years past and was hoping for a bigger turnout, but all of the guys in this class are fast and capable! For myself, I just train hard and push myself the best I can with a lot of motivation from the sidelines. I'm confident that I can be one of the top riders the rest of the season and I'm looking forward to more opportunities to see it all come together on the track!
You weren’t the only Lykins to have some success on Saturday. You also had two siblings with top three finishes. And little brother Noah, leads the points standings in the Youth ATVs by one point with two wins under his belt. So the big question is, who’s the fastest? And maybe the more important question, what the heck are you guys doing away from the track to have this kind of success on race day?
Yep- It was a good day at the track for Lykins Boyz Racing. I was super proud to see Squish P3 in his class! He has come a long way and I knew that was his goal this weekend - so I am happy for him. Noah too! He had a good finish and had to fight from the back the whole race. The midget is ripper for sure but definitely not as fast as his big bro! Come on Mikey, Is that even a real question?! Ha! But seriously, my Dad has taught us all how to be tough and work hard on and off the track. He has raised us all that way so whether its riding or working or whatever - we better be doing our best. Me personally, I like to work out so I’m in the gym 4-5 days a week. We usually try and train in Florida for 2 weeks each year and my brothers and I try to ride around the farm as much as we can.
Everybody has their rider or riders they look up to. When you look at the XC1, XC2, or even the amateur ranks, who are a few riders you look to for inspiration and motivation and why?
I've got several riders in mind.
Brycen Neal - He's been motivating me and I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know him and have had the opportunity to ride with him some. He's humble, encouraging and just a true champion. He has set the bar high and gives all riders (including myself) a new level to shoot for.
Wyatt Wilkin - We have got to connect with him because he is my Stepmom’s cousin and we have become good friends and family. His dad is a lot like mine and I can tell Wyatt has a lot of grit because of that!
Adam McGill - He’s just a dinosaur to the sport and we have got to train with him some too. I think he does a lot for the youth riders and it's neat to see a rider like that take interest in the up and comers
Devin Feehan - I know he doesn't race quads anymore, but if he did, I know he'd be competing for the top spot. He is an amazing athlete.
Daulton Keyes - He’s like my older brother. We ride together and race out of the same shop. We train in Florida together every year and have become good friends and I can say I look up to him on and off the track!
250 All Stars this year. I’m not rushing you, live in the moment, keep learning and working on your race craft. But what’s next for you and what’s the goals with your racing career?
I just want to always be my best. I want to keep climbing the ladder and hope I get a chance to run up there with some of the guys I just mentioned.
That’s about enough about racing. When you’re not at the track or training, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not training or at the track I like to work around the farm. I like to hunt, fish and learn about our family construction business. I like to ride pit bikes with friends and I like to aggravate my brothers. I like spending time with my family whether it's at the track or just hanging at the house. I guess im pretty simple but that’s okay with me.
I know you don’t do this alone. You’ve got a lot of great people and sponsors behind you. Who would you like to thank.
You are right. I've got to thank the Good Lord first and foremost. He has given me and my family this opportunity and all that comes with that. Im very grateful to Him and for the plan he has for my life on and off the track. My Dad and Ashley for all they do and the rest of my family and race families for supporting me. And to all of my sponsors: Lykins Contracting. Hilltop Motorsports. Baldwin Motorsports. MotoXtremes. Rath. Axis Shocks. Walsh. JB Racing. CST Tires. Twin Air. Fly. Scott Goggles. Quadtech seats. Stacy Mundy Photography. Ten4 Media. HCC Conditioning. Im very thankful for all the support I get and looking forward to keeping on rolling to the top with this crew! I appreciate them all!
