Rest in Peace
Howard Russell
1938-2023
The GNCC Racing family mourns the loss of our Chief Trailblazer, Howard Russell. Howard passed away yesterday, at the age of 85, after an extended illness resulting from complications of Covid-19.
Howard was a graduate of Chancey High School and a member of the Trimble Masonic Lodge, Chapter 557 (Kailub and Krue’s number). One of four brothers, Mr. Russell grew up on the family farm in Millfield, raising pigs, chickens and cows. He wasn’t afraid of hard work and helped whoever asked.
A man as tough as nails, Mr. Russell knew two things better than anyone: bulldozers and motorcycles. He spent 20 years as a heavy equipment operator with Ohio Operating Engineers and another 21 years with Columbia Gas, before turning his attention for the next 30 years to his beloved racetrack at Sunday Creek Raceway in Millfield, where he and his son Jeff Russell have promoted off-road motorcycle and ATV racing events for 34 years. The premiere event hosted at the facility is the John Penton GNCC, a round of the Grand National Cross County Series, an AMA National Championship. The John Penton GNCC is the oldest venue on the national circuit, attracting racers and their families from all over the world since 1990.
A life member of the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), Mr. Russell was an avid off-road racing enthusiast himself, competing in many local enduro races and earning a perfect score at the Alexander Motorcycle Club Enduro in Albany, Ohio, in the early 70’s. (For those who race enduros, you can appreciate the accomplishment of a perfect score.)
When not organizing his own events, Mr. Russell travelled the GNCC Racing circuit, serving as Chief Trailblazer. His duties included cleaning up the trails with his custom-made tiny dozer and pulling stranded riders from mud pits. In fact, the most famous obstacle on the circuit, “Howard’s Hole” at the Snowshoe GNCC, is named after him. He and GNCC founder Dave Coombs had matching dozers, and spent many a nights deep in the woods after dark grooming the trails for the next day’s competition.
Mr. Russell is survived by his bride of 65 years, Ruth Russell, and brother Dave and wife Norma Russell of Millfield, as well two children - daughter Teresa and husband Dennis Radford of Chauncey, and son Jeffrey and wife Carrie Russell of Morgantown, West Virginia; five grandchildren - Eric, Kailub, Kristen, Trevor, and Rozlind; and six great-grandchildren - Krue, Colyns, Keelan, Hayden, Braylon, and Brielle.
He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Mildred Russell, brother John and wife Goldie Russell, and brother Lance and wife Ruth “Butch” Russell.
Visitation will be held Tuesday 4-8 pm followed by a Funeral Service Wednesday at 11 am at the Bishopville Church of Christ at 6555 South State Route 78, Glouster, Ohio. Services will be officiated by Pastor Ron Fierce of the Bread of Life Church, where Mr. Russell was a member. Interment will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville, followed by supper at the Bread of Life Church in Jacksonville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Bread of Life Church in Jacksonville, Ohio.
God Speed, Howard.
