I just recently started watching “George Carlin’s American Dream” on HBOMAX. (Side note – I highly recommend it! For those age appropriate to watch of course.) But after interviewing “Nathaniel” (Who the heck is Nathaniel?) … alright after interviewing Bubz, I couldn’t help but think of a quote by comedian George Carlin,
“Those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music.”
Bubz is dancing, figuratively that is. Racing, training, driving his racing career forward and most importantly (at least in my humble opinion) he’s having fun along the way.
Let’s go back to the beginning. When did you first start riding? What was your first bike and when did you first start racing?
The beginning? I forgot what I had for breakfast already. No, my first ever bike was a CR50 that we just always had laying around and I rode it here and there when I was around 4-5 years old. My dad has always raced so I was always around it, but the hook didn’t set in until around 11 years old for me where I started racing and realized it was my dream to race dirtbikes for a living. That was on a KTM 85.
You’re in the 250 A class this year, a stacked class. Currently sitting 8th in points but arguably THE man to beat right now. Two wins in a row, and Top Amateur honors as well. How do you feel about your season so far?
So, I think it’s obvious I had a very rough start this year. Had a great Big Buck and then just a whole lot of stupid little injuries with my hands and wrists left me just trying to survive a few rounds. But I feel as confident as ever right now and am excited to show everyone what I am capable of (overalls wise) the rest of this season.
You opened the season with a P1, followed by a tough Florida round with a DNF. Rebounded with a top three, then a couple rounds I’m sure you’d like to forget outside the top ten. But as things seem to be clicking now, what’s made the difference for you these last couple rounds?
Well, Florida’s crash was a bad situation. Lacerated testicle is now in my top 3 least favorite injuries. The difference with the last few rounds is that even though Stew has been telling me it for years, I have finally surrendered my first lap sprint speed in exchange for some energy in the third hour and it seems to be helping me in the long run. I have also finally been feeling 100% healed on the starting line and that’s a big thing for the mental game I believe.
You train with some of the best. Who and where are you training and how has that helped you this season?
I am training with THE best through my eyes. Stew and the whole Shoals MX family is just the best. Even though I have been staying up in PA for these rounds up north. I am constantly talking with Stew and Harrison/Miles from Regulus Performance whether I like it or not all the time because they care. That being said I’d say majority of my progress recently has to go to Stew. The man is just such a good dude, broken back AND a broken face in the last few months and he’s still waking up worrying about ME and making sure I’m doing what I need to be doing. Badass individual to say the least.
Let’s talk about “Bubz Light, Baylor Heavy and the Boyz.” Any chance we get another video update on those incredible fishing excursions?
To be completely honest we basically film anything fun/stupid that we do. I have a good amount of footage from down there and was thinking about dropping just a big unseen footage version of all the vlogs. But every time Stew and I actually talk about it we come to the conclusion that it’s probably not the best idea for anyone’s reputation. I will be down there for the week before the Fourth of July to hang out and race the Vurb Shred tour so be on the lookout for that one in about a month.
On the topic of fun. When you’re not racing or training, what do you like to do for fun?
The only way I could describe it without listing the things we do is like this. Just picture a group of 6th graders but with a bigger budget, licenses (… well), cars, boats, weapons, and all sorts of toys. And then use your imagination, I guarantee it would be pretty close to what we are up to when we aren’t training.
Everyone has a crew that helps them out on race day. Who’s helping you at in the pits with the Tely Energy crew?
The whole Tely Energy KTM team/family is awesome. Everyone there has their own jobs on race day and it is just awesome to have so many people there willing to help out. I can't thank my dad enough for coming out to every single race no matter how busy he is to throw some of Woodys perfect bottles at my face. Wouldn’t feel right at the races without em.
What are you goals with racing? Short term and long term…
My goals for this year are to walk away with a 250A championship along with the TOP Amateur championship. As for long term, I am going to try my best to start chipping away at those overalls for the rest of this year. That way I can go into my rookie XC2 year with some confidence, and I can start trying to reel in some of those rocket ships running that class right now.
What’s you favorite cheat meal/snack/bad habit?
Leaving a GNCC on a Sunday, Ty and I are on the lookout for the greasiest, nastiest fast food we can find. It almost feels free after all the calories and work we put in that day.
Who are the sponsors and people you’d like to thank?
Tely Energy KTM and all team sponsors, Dad/mom, Ty’s mom, Kevin Ganoe, Todd Ely, Steward Baylor, The Shoals MX, Russ/ Tracy Wood, Regulus Performance (Miles/ Harrison), Factory Connection, Fox/Shift MX, Hellion Designs, Tear off Gaskets, Alex Lugar and everyone else in my corner!
