Layne McCormick does it all! Not only is he the 2017 ATV Youth Rider of the Year and an honor roll student, he also competes in a variety of sports for his school. Pretty impressive for a rider who isnt even a teenager yet. This latest championship makes his fourth GNCC title, with many more likely to come. Be on the lookout for this rider from Hughesville, Pennsylvania tearing up the front row on his Yamaha 150 hybrid.

Layne McCormick started riding ATVs at age 4, and competed in his first GNCC in 2011.

GNCCRacing.com: Congrats on the Youth Rider of the Year award! Who introduced you to riding and racing in the first place?
My dad, Brian, owns a power sports shop so riding has always been in my blood. My dad introduced me to racing when he was racing sprint cars. I started racing go carts when I was four. There were too many left turns, so I started racing four wheelers instead!

I know that your mom races, does your dad race as well? Do you go riding and train together with either parent?
My dad turns the wrenches and drives thousands of miles across the country so I can race. I am so thankful for him. My mom, Alicia, and I love to train and push ourselves together. I am finally faster than her! (Editor’s Note – Alicia was the 2016 WXC ATV champion)

Thats nice its always exciting to finally be faster than mom or dad! What made you decide to start riding GNCCs? Do you compete in other series too?
Well it all started when I got my first four wheeler when I was four years old. I rode it every day that I could. My dad talked to Chris Borich and his dad, Joe, and they invited me down to their house to ride. My first national was at Unadilla in 2011, I was instantly hooked. I race the GNCC series, WNYOA series, some of the local D6 series and some SORCS winter series.

Wow, you definitely have a lot on your plate! What is your favorite thing about racing?
Honestly my favorite thing about racing is meeting friends from all over the country. Then we compete against each other, and win or lose we are always still buddies.

Layne will be racing the supermini class in 2018 to try and defend his title before moving up to the 10 a.m. race in 2019.

Back to your accomplishments this year, it looks like you now have four national championships under your belt, plus this years Youth Rider of Year award ... which one are you most proud of and which one was the most challenging to achieve?
My favorite award is the Youth Rider of the Year award. I have been dreaming about that #1 plate since I was a little kid. It was also the most challenging for me because it took me six years to go through the youth ranks to be on top.

Since you are nowhere near aging out of the youth ranks, do you plan on staying in the same class for next season?
Since I am only 12 I am staying in the supermini class for 2018. In 2019, I plan to move to the Schoolboy class in the 10 a.m. race. Next season I am going to work really hard and try to defend my title.

Speaking of your age, I take it you're still in school ...
Yes, I am in 7th grade at Hughesville High School. My friends at school all think it's pretty cool what I do. I also managed to make honor roll the first marking period this year. It's really important to keep my grades up so that I can continue to go racing!

Thats a good attitude to have for sure! Now, your mom tells me you aren't just a motorsports athlete, but you compete in a lot of other sports too. What all do you do?
I love to compete in sports: I am on the high school mountain bike team, as well as cross country, wrestling and soccer. Those other sports also help condition me for racing so that’s definitely a plus.

Does it ever get hard trying to do all of that at once? What makes you want to keep doing everything?
You know, it does get really hard at times but the fact that it's hard is what makes me want to keep going. It teaches me how to push through it all and make myself better and stronger.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I hope to be still chasing my dream, making my parents proud and competing with the best of the best. Someday I want to be an XC1 champion!

Your mom also tells me you're pretty funny. Know any good jokes?
What is the difference between a snowman and snowwoman……? Snowballs!

I love it! Now, who would you like to thank?
Most importantly, I need to thank my dad. All of this would not be possible without him. He does so much to help both my mom and I in our racing program. Of course my mom and little brother Ryder too – he is my biggest fan. Also, I want to thank the rest of my family who support what I do: the Hunter family, the Borich family, the Hart family, Johnny Gallagher, Matt Pierce, the Glauda's and the whole XC1 class for inspiring me every day. And of course none of this would be possible without my amazing sponsors: Ye Olde Cycle Barn and everyone there, Maxxis, especially my buddy Casey Greek, Pierce Performance, Fox, Fly Racing, Walsh Race Craft, Carb Sport, Scott Motorsports, SSi Decals, All Balls Racing, Tireballs, Hinson, Quad-tech, HMF Exhaust, IQ Equipment, DP Brakes and Ryland Johnson Racing.
