The Unadilla GNCC has proved itself to be a wildly popular stop on the schedule since it's addition to the series in 2005. With record-breaking attendance numbers, great racing, and much more. Let’s take a look at some facts about Unadilla and what makes it so special.
Unadilla is known as one of the most legendary motocross tracks worldwide. It has hosted motocross events since 1969 including rounds of the Trans-AMA Motocross before transforming into the AMA Pro Motocross Championship in the early 1970s. For many years Unadilla served as the site of the United States Grand Prix, part of the World Motocross championship.
The already legendary track grew even more famous in 1987 when it hosted the Motocross of Nations. However, even with all of these top events, it wasn't until 2005 that Unadilla would see it's first ever GNCC event. The buzz before the event was huge, and the race became a popular one, and that popularity continues on year after year.
The unique thing about the Unadilla GNCC is that it gives amateur riders one of the only chances they have to ride the same track that the Pro Motocross racers do. Amateur racing at Unadilla is hosted on the "U2" track located behind the main track. Portions of both tracks are always used for the GNCC, so this also attracts some riders who wouldn't typically give woods racing a shot.
When GNCC Racing finally made it's first stop at Unadilla, it was greeted with rain. In fact, Unadilla has greeted us with rain more than once. The thick, black, sticky New York mud proved to be a challenge to the riders and a treat for the spectators to watch. The inaugural ATV winner would end up being that of Bryan Cook with Bill Ballance and Bryan Baker rounding out the podium. On the bike side, it would be Juha Salminen taking the overall win in his first year contesting the GNCCs, with New York's own Nate Kanney finishing 2nd ahead of Barry Hawk rounding out the podium.
Since then, Unadilla has seen it's fair share of epic racing moments and unique stories. In 2006, Nate Kanney would take the overall win in front of his home state crowd and he did so as a full privateer rider. 2010 saw Jimmy Jarrett take his 2nd ever GNCC overall win, but what made it special is that his first win had came an entire 10 years earlier giving him the longest span between GNCC overall wins.
On the ATV side, no rider has dominated Unadilla like Chris Borich. After snagging his first Unadilla win in 2007, he had taking the overall win at Unadilla all but twice, having been beaten by Chris Bithell in 2008. In 2011, Borich still got the XC1 win but it was Walker Fowler taking the overall win, doing so from the 2nd row in the XC2 Pro Am class.
As for the bikes, an interesting tidbit is that David Knight is the only rider to have won more than once at Unadilla. He did so in his two seasons contesting the GNCC tour, but since then, no rider has repeated as a Unadilla overall winner. Thad Duvall broke through for his first ever GNCC overall win at Unadilla in 2012, and has always had good showings at Unadilla.
The attendance numbers in the past few years at Unadilla have been staggering as well. The 2012 saw GNCC's largest rider turnout ever, and broke that record even further in 2013. Unadilla also draws racers that you don't typically see at a GNCC such as Pro Motocross racers. Broc Hepler, John Dowd, Zach Osborne and others have all given Unadilla a whirl. It also attracts riders from New England and Canada, such as JDay Off-Road champion, Johnny Girror who ran inside the top 5 overall for much of the 2013 Unadilla GNCC.
It's exciting to be gearing up to head back to GNCC Racing after the summer break and it's even more exciting to do so at such a legendary venue. Are you ready? It's almost time to go racing!
