When it comes to GNCC racing, one of the top names in the ATV ranks is that of Super Senior 45+ rider, Dave Simmons. With two rounds remaining, Dave has had a perfect season so far logging wins and overall morning podiums the whole way. We caught up with Dave to hear more.
GNCCRacing.com: How's it going today?
Dave Simmons: Not too bad, I’ve been fighting a cold and I need to get over that.
Can you believe another GNCC season is already winding down?
It seems like the work week last forever, the weekends don’t last long enough and the years just fly by.
I couldn’t have said that better myself! So what are your plans for the winter?
We’ve got a vacation planned with some racing friends in December. We have Wolf going along for our free entertainment, so the Bahamas will never be the same. After that, I’ll try to train and ride when the Lake Erie snow belt lets me.
When will you get back in the swing of racing?
I don’t take much time off, I’ll miss a weekend here or there, but I try and ride every weekend. I’m old and worry about taking too much time off, and not being able to get back in shape to do this. There’s also two indoor motocross tracks with in an hour of me, so I spend some time at those. I’m not an motocrosser, so anytime there just wears me out. As the season approaches I’ll try to get with friends and make a couple trips south to practice and get out of the snow.
What are your plans for 2013?
So far, no real changes. Looks like it’s going to be the same program.
How has your 2012 season gone?
Great, it really couldn’t have been much better. 11 wins in 11 races so far is pretty good!
How does it feel to have so many straight wins?
It feels awesome, but don’t for a second think it’s not a lot of work. There’s lots of time in the garage, and lots of time training.
Do you think you can do the same in 2013?
Well, you never know who is going to show up. Someone may show up and just destroy me.
Ã
Now you've been a familiar name in the GNCCs for quite a while, how did you get started racing?
I’ve always had wheels under me. I raced hare scrambles and motocross on motorcycles when I was growing up then later made the transition to the quad and I’ve just stuck with racing the whole time.
What attracted you to the GNCC Series?
I raced some local races with guys that raced the GNCC series, and I was running with them or beating them, so I thought I’d give it a try. I raced my first GNCC in Hickory North Carolina in 94 or 95, I did good enough that I knew I could win, I’ve been pretty much hooked since.
What has been the biggest accomplishment of your racing career?
Definitely winning the 2009 AMA/ATVA Vet/Senior Rider of the Year award.
What do you hope to accomplish down the road?Ã
If my body holds up I’d like to keep racing. If not, there’s enough remodeling and stuff I’ve put off to keep me busy.
You've seen the sport change some, even in past couple of years, where do you see it going in the future?
I have no idea where it’s going, I wish I had that foresight.Ã When the women first started racing they raced with the youth and look at the level of talent out there now, they’re down right fast. The utilities were for farming and I never would have dreamed they could go through the woods as fast as these guys are going. As far as the pro’s go, they’re unbelievable. I used to be able to keep up with anyone for the first lap while they were learning the track but that has changed. These guys just fly.
Alright, before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank?
