Welcome to Quick Fill.

It’s been a crazy summer, filled with lots of excitement, lots of travel and best of all, lots of racing! I claim that with my own schedule in mind, but I would venture to say that 90 percent of folks reading this column could honestly relate. At the very least, I hope you all had some sort of excitement flow through your summer months.

So here we are, approaching Labor Day weekend, also known as the unofficial end to summer. It seems like the summer slips away as soon as July 4th passes by but once September rolls around you may as well pack up your flip flops for good because it’s all downhill from there (and not in the good way, ha!) However, the best thing about the fall (next to pumpkin spiced-treats and cute scarves and boots) is that GNCC Racing kicks back into gear after a two-month hiatus.

So you’re going to go all out and race the last four GNCCs of the season, beginning with Unadilla next weekend. What do you need to know? First off, it’s in your best interest to PRE-REGISTER online before the event. Why, you ask? Well, the Unadilla GNCC has witnessed near-record breaking racer numbers for the past couple of years, which means there are A LOT of racers in New York and eastern Pennsylvania. As you may know, the registration lines can get a little hectic so do yourself a favor and take the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Fast Track, beat the lines and best of all, get a $20 gift card from our friends at Rocky Mountain! All you need to do is click HERE and follow the directions for online pre-registration.

And since it’s co-sanctioned with our wonderful friends at Western New York Off Road Association (WNYOA), that many more riders show up to garner points through both series. If you’re a WNYOA rider, please click HERE for updates from their end. If you’re new to this, WNYOA will match their classes up with GNCC’s classes and produce a crossover chart so you’ll have a better idea of what to run and to ensure you’re getting the correct points for the right class, etc.

If you’re not a WNYOA rider but you’re thinking of racing a GNCC for the first time, check out our National Classes to see where you fit in according to age, skill level and machine type/size. If you’re potentially looking to race Pro, Amateur or UTV, there is a specific set of rules for each, so be sure to check those out as well. Any other questions, feel free to call the Racer Productions office at 304-284-0084 for more information.

The Unadilla GNCC will host round five of the 50cc Micro Series and that will all go down Saturday evening at 4:30 p.m. so if you’ve got a little one who just isn’t ready for the 8 a.m. Youth ranks, check out the Micro division and see if there’s a place for him or her! And don’t forget, there’s a Moose Racing dinner on Saturday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m., it’s FREE and you can use it as an excuse to catch up with everyone on the summer break.

Just one weekend before the GNCC Series resumes in New York, many folks will be heading back to South Carolina and the Big Buck Farm for the 61st running of the Little Brown Jug Enduro. I got a note from Henry Turner, owner of Big Buck Farm, and he said this year’s course consists of about 60 miles of trail spread out among six different tracts of land. It starts at Big Buck Ranch in Cross Keys, works its way over to Silver Hawk Plantation in Buffalo, and then back to Big Buck. Henry said that they are “proud to be the first property to host both a GNCC and National Enduro in the same year! And for extra icing on the cake, we are also hosting the first Sprint Enduro to be held in the U.S. on October 11-12 this year.” The Little Brown Jug National Enduro is put on by the Greenville Enduro Riders Association.

Shane Watts and the crew want to let everyone know that they’ve dropped prices on their DirtWise "Ready to Race" bike rentals for the remaining GNCC events. Now, it’s only $400 for any rider to use a fully prepped Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise KTM race team machine, which includes fuel and race pit service, plus the commemorative front number plate off the bike to keep as a souvenir from the great experience! If you’re interested, act fast because they’ve only got two more spots remaining for the Unadilla GNCC. More information can be found HERE or by contacting [email protected].

So it’s true, there is OFFICIALLY another Bithell to deal with at the races. And no, there’s no baby! Chris and his longtime girlfriend, turned fiancé, turned wife – Chelsea – got married on Saturday, August 16 at the WISP resort in McHenry, Maryland. It sounds like a real GNCC-style wedding, complete with a grand entrance by Chris on his Suzuki LTR 450 and ending with the newlyweds “ripping a wheelie” (as the bride put it) down the aisle! Team Faith’s very own “Pastor Chuck LeMaster” married the Bithells and it sounds like it was a beautiful ceremony. Congratulations to Chris and Chelsea Bithell, we wish you both a lifetime of happiness!

And before I go, I’m going to throw it over to Jason “I only join Quick Fill when I need something” Weigandt. Just kidding Weege, we all know that you’re the smarter, funnier and less good-looking version of the current PR staff.

 Hi, Jason Weigandt here. I actually started this Quick Fill column back in the day. Remember me? Oh yeah and I just finished announcing the Snowshoe ATV race for RacerTV.com, so look for that to be posted shortly.

Anyway, this is a shameless plug for a bike I'm selling, a 2013 KTM 250 XC (two-stroke) I bought from the factory KTM team last year. It’s just like the one that won last year's XC2 title and is leading again this year: more info here. I have a baby on the way so this bike is going to be wasted sitting in my garage--go buy it so you can use it for what it's good for. I'm doing this for you, not me. I swear. Okay, back to your regularly scheduled Quick Fill. Go!

@JaredBolton:

Summer break is winding down as we speak but there's still plenty of racing going on as things begin to slow down. It's kind of crazy to think that next week we'll be starting that final push towards the end of the season. I know I say it a lot but time really does fly by!

Two weekends ago we saw the 4th annual Tennessee Knockout at the Trails Training Center in Tennessee. For those who haven't heard about this race before, it's basically an Extreme Enduro event with a different "knockout" format as the racers run several different qualifying races before determining a winner in the "final knockout". Each year it draws a slightly different turnout of riders than what you see at a typical extreme event (IE: Erzberg, Romaniacs, etc)

GNCC regular,Nick Davis came out to race the 4th annual Tennessee Knockout before the GNCC season starts back up again September 6-7 in New York.

The first two years saw Mike Brown taking the overall win before Endurocross specialist Cody Webb snagged the win there last year. This year saw a good turnout of familiar faces in the likes of guys such as Kailub Russell, both Grant and Stu Baylor, the Yamaha trio of Ricky Russell, Paul Whibley and Jordan Ashburn plus other GNCC regulars such as Nick Davis, Mark Fortner and Zach Love. It's always cool to see GNCCers branching out and trying different races, and word from this one was, it was tough... REALLY tough, which is to be expected.

Kailub Russell rode great earlier and easily qualified his way through to the main event, as well as Whibs and Grant Baylor. Stu Baylor had a little get off and ended up running into some mechanical issues that kept him out of the race. It also sounds like Stu Baylor ended up with some sort of wrist injury. The rumors started at the TKO but Baylor mentioned after the race that he was fine. However, when he didn't race the Atlanta Endurocross the following weekend, it came out that he did end up re-injuring his wrist but already underwent surgery to have it plated. Whether it happened at the race or practicing the following week, I don't know, but it sounds like something is going on there. We'll see what comes out in the coming days.

Ricky Russell has also been showing up at races while GNCC has been on a summer break.

In the main at the TKO Cody Webb came away with the win over Taylor Robert while Grant Baylor put in an excellent ride to take 3rd overall. As for the rest of the GNCC regulars, Whibs, Ricky Russell and Zach Love all ended up in the top ten taking 7th, 8th and 9th. Mark Fortner ended up 12th while Kailub Russell ran into some issues and ended up 14th. Regardless though, congrats to all these guys for even qualifying for the main because from all the videos and photos I've seen, it looked ultra-gnarly!

This weekend gives another opportunity to get in some last minute race time before Unadilla as the National Enduro series is back in action with the Little Brown Jug Enduro in South Carolina. The parking are, and one of the sections will be on familiar soil for GNCC regulars as well, at Big Buck Farms. It should be an interesting race to watch with this being the penultimate round of the enduros.

After Delong's podium finish at the Snowshoe GNCC, he has found his groove in the National Enduros and has taken the points lead.

Andrew Delong has found his groove this second part of the year and has taken over the points lead in the National Enduros. He could very well snag another win here but he'll have his regular challengers from the Enduro side. Grant Baylor has been riding great too and will be looking to snag a win in his home state.

I'm heading over to the Ironman today with Jeff Russell and Barry Hawk to pick up some equipment to bring back to the office, so I'm going to cut myself here for this week but don't worry, I'm planning on bringing some great pre-Unadilla info next week.

@HotRodney22:

What seemed so far away only days ago now seems so close. Only a little more than a week left in the 2014 GNCC Summer Break and anticipation is running high. Not only do we resume the season and dive head first into the final leg of the season but it is also Unadilla GNCC. And this as you may know already is no ordinary GNCC. This venue has produced the largest turnouts of any GNCC in history and with the many WNYOA riders that are expected to be in attendance, the competition will be as much as the numbers and then some. In my opinion there is no better way to kick it back into high gear than with this particular race and once again it should be a good one and it could turn the tides for some in the championship points race in many classes.

Whose ready to watch the GNCC action from Unadilla?

This week we continue our breakdown of the morning ATV racing action. Though we have talked about a good number of the morning classes and scenarios there are a few that remain to be discussed this week.

This week we will look a little closer at the 10:00 am race. First today is the Super Senior (45+). The SS+45 class has about as much talent lining up today as any class in the series. The last few years have been focused on “Super Dave” Simmons in the Super Senior (+45) class. Dave is actually eligible to run the Masters 50+ class but elects to keep it real interesting by battling his younger counterparts. The points this year has Dave sitting in 2nd place about 15 points out of 1st. However, that could be quite deceiving. Pointing out again the drop factor where only 9 races count toward the championship, Dave very well may be sitting in control of the point race or at least really close after Unadilla. Dave has amassed 6 wins so far this season and has finished 6th place on one account. Two other races Dave didn’t race so if Dave can stay consistent the rest of the four rounds of racing, he should have the title in hand. However, current class leader Richard Taylor may have something to say about that. Taylor has no wins this season but has finished no worse than 3rd at two events. He also missed Snowshoe with no points but has been able to maintain the point lead since round 4. The final four rounds could prove to be monumental in the final push for the championship.

 The Masters 50+ class seems to be a little more cut and dry as far as championships are concerned. Kenny Rich Sr. has accumulated 6 wins in the class, two 2nd place finishes and a 3rd which gives him a 71 point lead over the rest Jim Van Loocke.  Jim though had best be on his “A Game” these final rounds he has two riders tied for 3rd in the class only 14 points behind. Kenneth Haspel and Harry Stonebraker have 91 points each and the battle between these two could affect Van Loocke for 2nd in class. Each rider has been strong at each round they have competed in though Stonebraker has already burned his 4 drop events with no shows and in order for him to finish on top in this battle he is going to have to be on spot for these last races.

Silver Masters (55+) is not one of the more highly attended classes but yet again a great championship battle seems to be forming. Donnie Pruett may just be the man to beat in this class. Pruett has 6 wins thus far this season but only 25 point lead. That is a good point lead but Donnie realizes he cannot rest on his accomplishments he has 4 more races to go and like everyone Donnie knows these may be the most critical of the season. Especially when you look how quickly things could change with any major errors.

Thomas Vasko sits 2nd in points but in the first two rounds he looked like the man to beat. Even Pruett knew it. Vasko won the opening two rounds with Donnie not far behind in 2nd but has not been able to put the magic back together since then. Vasko still has a chance to win the championship and all he has to do basically is win out these last races and hope for a things to work in his favor behind him. In reality this one could come down to a tie at the end and then it is up to the tie breaking procedure to provide us our champion. Either way, I feel this will be a good class to watch in the closing rounds of the season.

Shane Pitzer in the Schoolboy (13-15) sits 8 points behind 1st place, each having 4 wins so far this season.

The Sport 15+ Class has also produced some good battles. These riders not only battle for class honors but many hope to do well in the overall. Regardless how their overall has been stacking up, this class sees what could be a clear-cut winner with consistency in the last rounds. Colton White leads Mike Foody by 27 points. White has 5 wins so far while Foody has yet to find the winners circle. He has finish consistently in or near the top 5 which has kept his hopes alive but unless the switch flipped or flips pretty doggone soon, White should seal the deal on this one in only a couple of races. Foody had best worry about maintaining his spot in second as Payton Adkins sits only one point behind 2nd and 4th place in points Mike Shaffer is only one more point behind him. The battle for 2nd surely is a hot one if nothing else.

The Schoolboy (13-15) C class has another battle shaping up. Kalab Hagan and Shane Pitzer sit 8 points apart and each has 4 wins apiece. If you dissect things right now Hagan has a fraction of more consistent results and if he can keep this momentum up, Hagan may be able to capture this title. However, these final rounds will carry some heavy weight from this point on and everything will be magnified for both riders good and bad.

And that will bring us to the heart of the Novice Division. Next time we hope to explore that a little closer as these classes too have some major battles lying ahead.

That will do it for now. Till next time, God Bless Your Heart and All Your Vital Organs.
