Moose Racing Wild Boar GNCC: ATV Race Report
Fowler and Landers Continue XC1 and XC2 Success at Round Two
PALATKA, Fla. (March 8, 2020) – The second round of racing in the 2020 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, kicked off Saturday, March 7, 2020 with an action-packed day of off-road ATV racing. The 6th Annual Moose Racing Wild Boar GNCC took place at Hog Waller Mud BOG & ATV in Palatka, Florida.
As the green flag waved at the beginning of the two-hour race WFR/GBC/Fly Racing/Yamaha’s Walker Fowler did not get out to the start he had hoped for, coming through timing and scoring sixth on the opening lap. Fowler would put his head down and go to work, picking off riders one-by-one. As they white flag came out, Fowler had made the pass for the lead stick, but only by 1.005 seconds. Fowler tried to place a gap over the rest of the field on the final lap of racing, crossing the finish line 5 seconds ahead of the competition.
CST/Houser Racing/Waynesburg Yamaha’s Brycen Neal gained the early lead as the riders headed into the Florida trails. Neal held onto the lead for the first two laps of racing, but a charging Fowler was ready to make his move as the white flag came out indicating one more lap to go. Neal would be unable to hold off Fowler, but would remain second overall as the checkered flag flew.
Coming through third overall, and earning another podium finish at round two was Action Off-road/Tely Energy Racing/Kenda’s Cole Richardson. After moving into the third place position on the second lap, Richardson would have a consistent day. Richardson would make a last lap charge on Neal, trying to overtake second place but Neal would hold him off. Richardson currently sits second in the National Championship standings.
Earning a second-straight top five finish in the XC1 Pro class was HHR/Maxxis/Fly Racing/Ithaca Recreation Sports’ Hunter Hart. After sitting in the fifth place position for majority of the race, Hart made a last lap charge and overtook fourth. Hart now sits fourth in the National Championship standings after two rounds of racing.
JMR/GBC/Elka/Moose Racing’s Jarrod McClure would battle throughout the day, ultimately rounding out the top five overall. After coming through second on the opening lap, McClure would ensue in multiple different battles throughout the day. McClure would finish 9 seconds behind fourth place, and now sits third in the points standings as the series heads to Georgia for round three.
After a rough start to the season, McGill Mafia/OBOR tires/LSR/Moose Racing’s Adam McGill would come through to finish sixth overall in Florida. McGill would work his way through the pack after starting out in eighth place, earning valuable points towards a championship hunt.
Phoenix Honda Racing’s Chris Borich crossed the line seventh overall, after coming through timing and scoring third on the first lap. Borich had his work cut out for him, as a hungry pack of XC1 riders looked to battle with him throughout the entire two-hour race.
Working his way to eighth overall after an 11th place starting position was BNR Motorsports/GBC/HMF Engineering’s Josh Merritt. Merritt put his head down and charged after the white flag came out, making his way from 10th to his finishing position of eighth place.
After jumping out to grab the XC1 $100 All Balls Racing Holeshot Award, Devon Feehan Racing/GBC/Fly Racing’s Devon Feehan would head into the woods first. However, a mistake would cost him the lead as well as a good starting position at the beginning of the race. Feehan would finish out the day ninth overall.
GBC/Fly Racing/HMF/Yamaha’s Johnny Gallagher rounded out the top 10 in the XC1 Pro class, while finishing 11th overall on the day. Gallagher started just outside of the top 10, but would make the necessary passes and ride smart to grab another top 10 finish in the class. Gallagher currently sits eight in the overall points standings.
LanMills XC/WFR/Magna1 Lubricants’ Drew Landers brought home his second-straight XC2 Pro-Am class win at the Wild Boar GNCC. Landers worked his way from a second place start, to leading the way as the checkered flag flew. Landers currently holds the points lead in the XC2 Pro-Am class, and ninth in the overall points standings.
Making his way from fifth to second in the XC2 class was BNR Motorsports/SSi Decals/Kenda's Jordan Poplaskie. As the race got underway, Poplaskie began picking riders off one-by-one to try and battle for a class win. However, time would expire before Poplaskie could charge for that coveted class win. Poplaskie currently sits second in the points standings for XC2, and 10th in the overall standings.
Earning his first-ever XC2 Pro-Am podium finish was BNR Motorsports/DP Brakes/GBC’s Brandon Frazier. The Florida native would grab the early lead and battle at the front of the pack for majority of the day. Frazier has competed in the GNCC series for multiple years, but this is his first in the XC2 class.
College A competitors Tre Seiffert and Grayson Eller came through to finish 16th and 18th overall, bringing home the top two spots on the Top Amateur afternoon podium. Seiffert would clinch the College A class win, with Eller coming in second. The two are now tied for first in their class points. Vet A competitor, Jeff Pickens rounded out the top amateur podium with a 21st overall, and class victory.
The battle was on in the 11 a.m. race, from the 4x4 Pro class to the WXC battles. As the race got underway it was the #204 machine of Robert Smith jumping out to grab the $100 BNR Motorsports 4x4 Pro Holeshot Award. However, when the checkered flag flew it was OBOR/Can-Am/Derisi Racing/Action Sports’ Landon Wolfe coming through the finish first, and taking his second-straight win.
Bell Powersports/Nine2/Moose Racing’s Cody Collier would put up a great battle with Wolfe for the 4x4 Pro and morning overall win. As the white flag came out, Collier was in the lead and looking to place a gap over the rest of the field, however a mistake on the last lap let a lurking Wolfe make the pass and take the win. Collier would remain second overall, and sits second in the point standings.
Rounding out the 4x4 Pro and overall podium was Can-Am/BNR/Kenda/Tire Blocks/HMF’s Robbie Pecorari. Pecorari started out second as the pack came around on the first lap, but he would battle throughout the entire race. After two rounds of racing Pecorari sits third in the points standings as competitors head to Georgia next weekend.
In the WXC class it was Ryland Johnson Racing/Precision Racing/Tireballs’ Hannah Hunter taking her second consecutive race win after working her way up from a third place start on the day. Hunter currently leads the way in the WXC National Championship points standings.
Fly Racing/GBC Motorsports/Yamaha Racing’s Traci Pickens held the early lead in the WXC class, resulting in a battle with Hunter for the last half of the race. Hunter would be able to make the pass stick on Pickens as the white flag flew. Pickens would try to put a last lap charge on Hunter for the win, but would come through second in the WXC class on the day.
Coming through to earn third in the WXC class was Action Off-road/GBC/Moose Racing’s Kaitlyn Osburn. After a rough start to the season two weeks ago in South Carolina, but this weekend she was up front battling trying to reel in the top two women at the front of the pack.
