At just 14 years old, Colton McQuarrie is already making a name for himself in the PM Bike Race, going undefeated so far in the 150A class while consistently putting himself inside the top 45 overall against much older and more experienced competition. With his speed and consistency, McQuarrie has become one of the young riders to watch in the future of GNCC Racing. We caught up with McQuarrie to talk about his season so far and what goals he has moving forward for this week’s edition of Tuesday Toolbox.
GNCC Racing: Jumping straight into it, you’ve gone undefeated so far this season with six straight wins in the 150 A class. How does it feel to be on a run like that?
Colton McQuarrie: I’d say amazing, being able to be consistent.
When you’re on a winning streak like this, does your mindset change at all heading into each round?
For the most part, no. I always have the same goal going into every race. At some tracks, I have to tell myself to chill out to preserve my bike and me.
You’re the youngest rider since the inception of the 150A class in 2020 to be winning the class and consistently finish inside the top 45 overall. What’s helped you get to that level so early, and does that give you confidence moving forward?
A few things, a big one is my trainer, Brandon, bringing my fitness and overall health to last a 3+ hour race. My dad. He has worked with me on my skill and mindset. My confidence comes with my family's support and all the great people around me.
Most racers your age are still competing in youth classes, but you’re already in the PM race, putting in rides we don’t usually see from someone your age, even compared to some of the greats of the sport. What’s been the biggest factor behind your speed so far?
Training on and off the bike and always riding with someone better than me.
Is there a track so far this season where you felt the strongest, and what round are you looking forward to most?
Florida/ Wild Boar. Always my favorite. Most looking forward to Mason-Dixon.
Okay, backtracking a bit, take us back to where it all started. When did you start riding? What was your first bike? When did you start racing? What was your first GNCC?
Started Riding at 3, Racing at 4, (My #34) First bike -PW 50, First GNCC was 2019 at Black Sky in New York - 1st in class / 50 senior (6-7) / 4th OA.
Who’s your favorite pro racer, or someone you really look up to and try to learn from in your racing?
Haiden Deegan, I like his aggression and attitude to win. I’ve been watching him since I was 5.
What’s your favorite part about being at the GNCC races each weekend?
Peddling the track with Jiggs (Fustini), he’s a good influence and friend. We are both there for the same reasons.
Outside of racing, what do you like to do in your free time?
Downhill MTB, any biking really. The skills I learn biking I can transfer to my dirt bike.
As the season continues, what are your goals for the rest of the year, and what’s the next step you’re hoping to take after the 150 A class?
Goal - win the championship and get inside the top 30 OA. Next - four stroke A lites.
Finally, who would you like to thank for helping you out this season?
My mom and Dad. Donnie Luce, Randy Hawkins, Corey MacDonald, Chris P, and everyone on the AmPro Yamaha team. Brandon Hartranft /alpha mx dynamics, Erick and Tara Veit, John Carson, @blucruofficial, @yamahamotorusa, @mooseelite, @fmf73, @ridedunlop, @fcsuspension, @scottmotosports, @helmethouseusa, @innteck_usa, @mrwolfsolve, @fasstcompany, @fastway.moto, @vpracingfuels, @shoeihelmetsusa, @sidimotousa, @odigrips, @odimoto, @bulletproofdesigns, @imsproducts, @evanspowersport, @worksconnection, @didchain, @dpbrakesracing, @tmdesignworks, @cycra and @sengegraphics.
