This week GNCC Racing caught up with XC1 Pro eMTB Competitor, Cody Pivirotto, to chat about everything eMTB. From how he got into racing eMTBs, training and more!
What first got you into eMTB racing? When was your first GNCC? Have you raced/ridden anything else, or just an eMTB?
Cody Pivirotto: I raced my first GNCC in 2013 when I was 10 at Snowshoe on a KTM 65. I also started racing a local series in 2012. In 2014, I started mountain biking to cross-train for dirt bike racing. In 2015, I started racing mountain bikes and still tried to race dirt bikes when I could. I then got an e-bike and started racing EMTB in 2021 and moved to pro in 2022.
What did training look like for you over the off-season?
During the off-season, I take a little time off the bike but stay active snowboarding and training on a stationary bike, and also body weight training.
You won your first eMTB overall last year at the Mountaineer. After coming so close so many times, finally getting that win—and proving you can beat the top riders—had to be a huge moment. How did that victory impact your mindset, and how does it fuel your confidence heading into this season?
Last year, I got my first overall win at the Mountaineer! I knew it was possible, I wanted it so bad, and that day finally came, the double header format was awesome, after the first race on Friday, I was so excited and carried a lot of momentum into the to race on Saturday. The first win is the toughest, but I gained a lot of confidence and learned a lot during last season, and I’m fired up for this season and hopefully more wins!
Off the track, what does your fitness routine look like? How do you stay in shape for intense races?
Off the track I ride 3-4 times a week, a mix of analog bike, ebike, and dirt bike. Body weight training and eating clean keeps me feeling ready to perform my best.
Racing at the pro level brings many challenges. What’s been the hardest part about competing in the pro class?
The hardest part about racing at a pro level I remind myself to have fun because that’s what it’s all about but also taking it very seriously because I’m competing against other high level athletes.
What’s your favorite GNCC venue to race at, and why?
My favorite venue is a close call between Snowshoe and Mason-Dixon, a lot of my friends and family come out to those races and I really enjoy the venues, it’s really a good time.
Looking ahead, what’s the next step for you in your racing career? Are there specific goals you’re working toward this season?
My goals are ideally to win the GNCC eMTB overall and race dirt bikes at some as well.
Enough about racing! When you’re not at the track or training, what do you like to do for fun?
When I’m not racing, I work at Pro Bike+ Run in Pittsburgh as a mechanic and salesman, I do ride a lot for fun with friends and family and spending time outdoor and traveling.
Finally, we know you can’t do this by yourself. Who are the people and sponsors you’d like to thank?
I have a great support team behind me pushing me to do my best constantly, my family and girlfriend are super supportive, and so is Pro Bike + Run, with deals on products and managing my work/ race, and training schedule to allow me to make it to the races.
