Women's Wednesday: Back to Battle

After a long summer break, we're finally heading into the final three rounds of the Grand National Cross Country Series AMA National Championship for the women to fight for their overall spot in their classes. We recently got to hear from a few of the WXC racers what they've been up to in preparation. Let's take a look at where things stand as we near the time to crown some female champions.

Jessica Elioff holds the lead in the WXC points heading into the last 3 rounds.

All eyes are on the WXC ATV class as only three points separate Jessica Elioff shooting for her first ever WXC championship, and defending champion Hannah Hunter attempting to maintain her number one plate. Elioff has landed her Elioff Racing/BNR Motorsports/GBC Tires/Fly Racing backed ride in the center spot on the podium five times this year, with only one race off of the box. Hunter has claimed three wins on her Fly Racing/OBOR Tires/HMF machine and has proven consistent as the only racer in class landing on the podium every single round. Keeping in mind that the WXC classes only have one drop this year, this championship battle is sure to come down to the final round at Ironman!

JMR/Action Off-Road/GBC/Moose Racing's Katelyn Osburn sits in the third overall spot in class after five podium finishes. The consistency has been there for Osburn and we won't be surprised to see her on the box in these final few.  Chloe Harper in fourth overall has been one of our favorite up and comer stories to watch this year. In her rookie WXC season, Pro Graphx/Penske Racing Shocks/Lonestar's Harper started the year putting herself in the lead battle mix with a couple top five finishes, and by round five landed her first podium. That wasn't the end of it! She followed it up with a second place finish at round seven, and her first ever WXC win at round eight. It's looking like a bright future ahead for the young athlete!

Traci Pickens secured her first podium finish of the year, and is looking to earn more before the season comes to an end.

A fan favorite and twelve time WXC champion, Traci Pickens continues to challenge the young WXC racers on her GBC Tires/Yamaha Racing/Fly Racing machine. After consistent top fives this season, Pickens finally landed her first 2023 podium at Snowshoe just before the break to secure her fifth overall position heading into the final three. With some momentum and time to regroup we could see her up there again before the season is over!

Rachael Archer continues to hold the WXC bikes points lead after earning six wins so far this season.

Rachael Archer has taken a commanding points lead in the WXC Bike class with six wins so far this season. If all goes well for the Ampro Yamaha racer and defending champion, she will have secured the number one plate for the second time before the final round. But as we all know, this is GNCC racing and anything can happen! Korie Steede in second overall has proven center spot worthy three times this season on her Trail Jesters KTM. After winning the first two rounds of the year, Steede remained steady with another four podiums. Battle after battle, the center spot seemed to elude her until round eight. A race that had us all on our toes, Steede and Archer were back and forth for two hours before Korie secured her third win of the season. We wouldn't be surprised to see her take another before the year comes to an end.

Rachel Gutish is looking to earn a win before the season comes to a close.

WXC veteran, GasGas/OverandOut's Rachel Gutish has been inching closer to that win with her consistent podiums, but with Endurocross in her sights this time of the year, there's a potential podium spot open for another WXC racer to prove their skills at the final three rounds. Prestin Raines in fourth overall has yet to finish outside the top five this season. After two podium finishes at round seven and nine and her excitement on moving to a GasGas over the break, she certainly has the momentum to do it again as we return to racing. WXC rookie Kayla O'neil is in a solid fifth overall on her  V3 CDR/Garrison Tree Service Kawasaki. Persisting on her improvement, we had the pleasure of seeing O'neil land her first pro podium at round six.

The WXC E-MTB overall finishes will be determined by their best six out of nine races. Ashley Hendershot currently leads without drops as the only racer to line up at all rounds this season. However, Ginny McFall will lead the way after dropping a missed round and having three race wins in 2023. Alexandra Cardoza sits in third with one race win and consistent podium finishes.

We've had the pleasure of chasing nail biting, wheel to wheel WXC battles all season long, and we're more than eager for the final three GNCC races as things shake out!

The women of GNCC Racing doesn't stop with the WXC classes. From the youth to the veterans, they show up and show out. Here's where the overalls stand before drops are calculated for the women's classes after summer break:
