Camp Coker Bullet WXC Race Report
Osburn and Sheets Take WXC Premier Class Wins

SOCIETY HILL, S.C. (March 31st, 2021) – Round four of the 2021 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place on March 27th and 28th in Society Hill, South Carolina. This year’s FMF Camp Coker Bullet GNCC, held at Moree’s Sportsman’s Preserve, ended up being the largest event GNCC has held on the property in the past six years that is has been on the schedule.

On Saturday, it was the WXC ATV riders going to battle for the fourth time this season on a track that proved to be as rough as Georgia and as gnarly as Florida a few weeks prior. As the riders jockeyed for position it was Fly Racing/GBC Motorsports/Yamaha Racing’s Traci Pickens snagging the $100 BNR Motorsports Holeshot Award and early lead into the woods. Traci seems to be finding her stride with her second podium finish of the season, a very respectable third place. Traci heads into round five sitting third in points.

The Fly Racing/HMF/Obor Tires backed ride of “Hurricane” Hannah Hunter put together her second podium finish with a second place on the day.

The defending champ Hannah had this to say, “This was a hard one to swallow, finishing second place and only one second out of first place. Glad to get all the bugs fixed and be back on the podium. Now to get my head on straight and be ready to rip in three weeks.”

Hannah exploded on the scene last year and started 2021 with a win at Big Buck. But in round two and three she landed just off the podium. Safe to say the defending champ is hungry to get back to the center of the box.

Action Off-Road/Moose Racing/GBC Motorsport’s Katelyn Osburn made it two wins in a row over the weekend. Kate is the only rider in the WXC class to finish on the podium in every round and carries the points lead into round five. Kate has seen her fair share of second place and third place finishes over the years. This year just has a different feel for Katelyn. The bike setup, the outlook and focus are all in place for a championship run. We’ll see if she can keep things rolling as we enter the meat of the season.

Rounding out the top five were Angel Magee finishing fourth and Emily Wise in fifth place.

In the Women’s class Taylor McClish took her third win of the season, followed by Ava Wolf in second and Makenna Bruderly rounding out the top three. Anna Nicely had a good day finishing fourth and Jannelle Jirousek rounded out the top five finishers out of 17 women that were entered in the class. Karlie Martin faced some struggles in round four but remains the points leader heading into Tiger Run in a few weeks.

In the youth rankings it was Courtney Crump taking 7th in the 250 (13-15) class. Courtney has had her struggles the last couple rounds. Even with the struggles she’s only four points out of the points lead. Tory Mittendorf snagged her second win in a row in the Schoolgirl (13-15) class while the points leader, Isabella Gouker took second and Haley Blackburn rounded out the top three.

Makenzie Luckadoo took her third podium of the season, only this time it was center of the box for the Girl’s Sr. class. Kenzie currently sits second in points behind Alyssa Rodgers. Alyssa kept her perfect podium streak alive as well as the points lead with a third place finish. Madison Luckadoo had her best race of the season finishing second on the day.

In the Girl’s Jr. class Avery Collins made it two wins in a row and now sits six points back from Khyler Davis for the points lead. Khyler took second place on the day and is the only rider to land on the podium in all four rounds to start the year. Finishing third on the day was Grace Rich.

On Sunday it was, Babbitt’s Online Monster Energy Kawasaki of Korie Steede grabbing the $100 Trail Jester’s WXC Holeshot Award and early lead. Unfortunately for Korie that was the only real highlight of the race.

Korie, “I set myself up to have a great day right off the start ripping the holeshot! Had a solid first lap leading with minimal mistakes. Wish I could say the same going into the second lap. Pretty upset with my riding on lap two. I found myself on the ground more times than I should have been and there’s no excuse for it. Ended the day in fifth. I’ll be working harder these next few weeks and be back with a vengeance.”

Taking her second win of the year was the defending Champ, Becca Sheets aboard the BABS Racing Yamaha/Fly/Maxxis/Pro Circuit Yamaha.

Becca, “Camp Coker, you were a rough track. So much good racing in the WXC mix. I’m happy to grab another win here this year on the Yamaha. Thanks to Tyler, Johnny and all the people out there getting us through the mud holes.”

Becca is now tied for the points lead with Rachel Archer. During Sunday afternoon’s RacerTV broadcast she broke the news that 2021 will be her last season as a WXC Pro. What’s next for Becca? Well, we’re not sure. I tried my best to get Johnny Gallagher to spill the beans during the broadcast, but the man is like a bank vault. I have to believe even after the season ends, we’ll be seeing plenty of Becca in the coming years. In the meantime, I’ve got to think Becca would love nothing more than to cap off her WXC career with another National Championship. In post-race conversations with her she seems to be all smiles and fun. Soaking up every second at the track.

The AmPro Yamaha ride of Rachael Archer finished the day in second place behind Becca.

Rachael, “Super rough day! Had to fight my way from the back after getting pushed into the banners at the start. Went from sixth to first in one lap. Gnarly track to pass and a lot of one line meant lapped traffic was chaos and it meant I was on the ground way more than I should have been. Lots of room for improvement!”

Looking at the points standing in the WXC class you better buckle up folks. Becca and Rachael are alternating wins and second place finishes. This one might very well come down to Ironman in October.

Finishing third on the day was the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Tayla Jones. The third place finish was Tayla’s second podium appearance of the year.

Tayla, “Camp Coker was gnarly! The ground was super soft and got rough fast! My day started off with a sweet start right behind Korie Steede. From there I tried to manage the first lap as arm pump was killer. There was a lot of battling back and forth up until the last lap. My fitness was great, and I was able to move into third and ride it to the finish. Overall good day with much room for improvement, but a step in the right direction.”

Rounding out the top five was Beta USA’s Rachel Gutish in fourth and Babbitt’s Online Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Korie Steede in fifth.

In the Women’s amateur class, it was Kayla O’Neill taking her second win, Rachel Harris finishing second and Tania Gonzalez rounding out the top three in the class.

Women’s (35+) class saw Dawn Silvia staying perfect on the year with her fourth win in a row. Annette Campbell took second and Claudia Danielewicz finished in third. Morgan Johnson took her second win of the year in the Women’s C class while Alexis Sullivan finished second and Emily Warfle rounded out the box in third.

Ellie Winland took her second win in a row for the Girl’s (8-15) class. Ellie seems to have gotten things figured out after starting with a fourth and fifth place finish. Ellie now leads the points chance by one over Addison Elliott. Lilly Howerton took second on the day and Ruby Fustini finished in third place.
