Mountaineer Youth ATV Race Report
Henderson and Davis win Mountaineer

The Mountaineer GNCC, round twelve of the 2019 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place  on October 12th and 13th in Beckley, WV. The race was located at an absolutely stunning venue, Summit Bechtel Reserve. The facility is owned and managed by Scouts of America and is the site of the yearly National Scout Jamboree. Given that this is West Virginia, the track was quite technical compared to most other GNCCs. There were no big mudholes or hill climbs like at Snowshoe, but there was very little flat ground. As far as the soil goes, there was a little bit of everything – loamy topsoil, clay and sandy soil all made appearances. The one constant was the tree roots and rocks, which were pretty much everywhere. The track also degraded a bit differently than how it normally would; instead of the ruts getting deeper and deeper, at a certain point the machines dug down to a layer of rock and stopped. However, the shale and soft dirt on the hillsides broke away and piled up in the course, making wheelspin an issue and making the hillclimbs progressively more difficult.

The weather on Saturday was foggy, overcast and rainy for most of the time the ATVs were racing. Despite the weather, ground conditions were great - it wasn’t a mud pit or dust bowl the way many of the races have been this year. Like the adult courses, the youth riders were on fairly tight, technical trail with almost no wide-open field sections. Of the 54 youth ATV riders, Parker Henderson won the overall, while Khyler Davis took the overall in the 37-rider micro ATV race.

In the YXC1 race, it initially appeared that Damien Hawkins was going to win two in a row. He led the race right up until the last lap, when some misfortune dropped him back to 6th place. This left Parker Henderson with an opening to take the win, though Charlie Stewart was close behind him in second. Meanwhile, Nicholas Dearing had dropped back to seventh midway through the race, but was able to fight his way back up to a podium finish.

In the YXC2 class, Tyler Cox won in a dominating fashion, leading the race from start to finish and taking the win by over four minutes. Shayne Crull finished second, also with a substantial margin over Heath Randolph, who earned his second podium in a row.

The overall non-YXC rider in the ATV youth race was Caden Spires, racing in the 125 Sr. (12-15) class. He placed 9th overall.

Khyler Davis moved up to the MXC1 class last round and this round was able to put together a strong ride and take her first MXC1 win and her third overall Micro win this season! Bodie Buckhannon, the current points leader in the class, didn’t let her have that first win easily though. For the majority of the race, their laptimes were close to identical. However, Buckhannon had two slower laps mid-race that were enough to cost him the win. Meanwhile, Uriah Shriver and Garrett Cox, also battled closely for the third place. In the end it was Shriver who came out on top, earning his first podium of the season.

Tyler McLaughlin and Ethen Berner were locked in an incredibly close battle from the start to the checkered flag! The two riders were never much more than ten seconds apart all race, and often were much closer than that. McLaughlin eventually took the win, but by less than two seconds. Third place Reed Stevens finished a full lap down from the top two, though he was also able to lap the rest of the field.

The overall non-MXC rider in the Micro ATV was Zoey Hawkinberry (HON), racing in the 90 stock (8-11) class. She finished 6th overall.

The final round of the 2019 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series will take place on October 26 and 27 in Crawfordsville, IN, with the Ironman GNCC. ATV, Micro and eBicycle racing will take place on Saturday while Bike racing will take place on Sunday.
