The CST Camp Coker Bullet GNCC Women’s Race Report
Osburn and Jones bring home the win in South Carolina

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 30, 2018) – Round five of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series, an AMA National Championship, took place Saturday, April 21st and Sunday, April 22nd. This was the third running of Society Hill, South Carolina’s Camp Coker Bullet at Moree’s Sportsman’s Preserve. While both Camp Coker and Big Buck take place in South Carolina, they could not be any more different. Camp Coker has a mix of sandy soil and black loam. Different proportions of each component lead to different wear patterns - sand whoops will form in some of the softer places, while choppy braking and acceleration bumps in the harder ones.

The wide-open grasstracks, tighter single-track, and the old Camp Coker motocross track give the course a lot of variety as well. Additionally, there were also plenty of non-racing attractions last weekend: a concert (courtesy Monster Energy) and a fishing rodeo on Saturday, as well as an upgraded swimming hole, with a rope swing, several zip lines and a waterslide that started on top of the hill and led down into the pond.

There were 74 female racers that took to the track this weekend. Katelyn Osburn earned her first win of the season in the ATV WXC class, Addy Nible took home the Women’s UTV win while Tayla Jones grabbed her fourth win in five rounds.

In the ATV race on Saturday, Sadiee Gorrell took her second holeshot in a row. She remained in the lead with Megan Shepherd close on her tail, until Shepherd missed a corner halfway through the first lap. Angel Knox took advantage of the mistake, moving up into the second place position. Gorrell found herself stuck on lap one, dropping all the way back to seventh, and ultimately was unable to make up that time.

Shepherd had a rough encounter with a lapper, and found herself in a mudhole as well. The incident knocked her back into fourth, allowing Traci Pickens to take the lead, with Knox still in second and Osburn in third. Osburn killed it on the moto track, passing Knox on lap three and taking over the lead on lap four. She came through the scoring zone at the end of the race with over a minute on Pickens, who was her next closest competitor. Knox was able to retain the last podium spot, while Shepherd and Jaida Phillips rounded out the top five.

Osburn said that with the open fields and tight, technical sections this was “her kind of track”. She also told us, “it was super fun out there and I am excited to get my first win of the season!”

Alexis Keys took her first win of the season in dramatic fashion, getting in one extra lap over the rest of her competition in the Girls ATV youth class. Andrea Rodgers and Hannah Moore finished second and third respectively. Meanwhile, Hannah Hunter came out on top this weekend in the Women’s ATV class.

Addy Nible clinched the Women's UTV class win on Saturday afternoon at round five of the 2018 GNCC season.

When the 4 p.m. UTV race began, it would be Addy Nible leading the Women’s class from start to finish. Nible would also be the only UTV driver in the Women’s class to complete five laps at the Camp Coker Bullet GNCC. Lauren Trippodo would finish second in her first GNCC UTV racing appearance while Vickie Fowler rounded out the podium in third. Nible now leads the Women’s UTV championship points standings by three points over Renee McGee.

In the bike race on Sunday, Mackenzie Tricker would pull yet another holeshot. However, Rachel Gutish and Becca Sheets would chase her into the woods. Gutish would hit the ground less than a mile in, leaving a path open for Sheets to take second and Tayla Jones to move into the top three. Tricker stayed in the lead through the majority of the second lap, before getting caught up in a vine in the tight bike-only section. Both Sheets and Jones would pass her, and although Sheets led briefly, before the second lap was over Jones had taken the lead.

Jones held on to that first place position throughout the remainder of the race, despite a remarkably tight battle. There were only seconds between her and Sheets; by the time they passed through the scoring zone with the checkered flag waving, Jones had only been able to amass a thirteen second lead. Sheets mentioned afterward, “I have never had a race that was that much fun going that fast. We all wanted to win and it was definitely showing!”

Despite continuing issues in the single-track, Tricker was able to make up the time in faster sections, and took a relatively close third place. As for the rest of the top-5, Brooke Cosner had a bad start, but by the end of lap one she had worked her way into fourth. She remained there, virtually unchallenged, for the remainder of the day. However, Gutish and Kendall Lafollette, a WXC racer who has been out for over a year due to a combination of injury and school, had a heated battle for fifth place, going back and forth several times throughout the day, with Gutish barely coming out on top. Tayla was glad to get another win, stating “the lappers kept the racing close between us, and it was cool to have such a tight race!”

Prestin Raines continued her winning streak in the Girls (8-15) bike class, with her regular competition, Jocelyn Barnes DNF-ing on the third lap due to bike problems. Without the competition, she dominated the class, completing full two laps more than the next closest rider. The second and third place riders, Ashley Fowler and Faith Simmons both took their first podiums of the season. In the Women’s Class, Katie Benson took her first win of the season, while Alexis Phillips took her third win this year in Women’s C.
