Coastal Racing/Husqvarna's Ryan Sipes Earns First-Career GNCC Overall Victory

The Pennsylvania-based Coastal Racing/Husqvarna Team put forth an impressive showing on Sunday in front of a hometown crowd for West Virginia's Mountaineer Run GNCC. Team rider Ryan Sipes led from start to finish en route to his first-career victory in GNCC Racing, while his XC2 250 Pro class teammates Craig DeLong and Layne Michael finished 2nd and 3rd respectively, with Jack Edmondson rounding out the podium in the FMF XC3 125 Pro-Am class.
XC1 Open Pro
Sipes came into the weekend a little rocky from the previous round where he rode through the pains of tendonitis in his hand. However, that didn't stop the Kentucky native from leading all seven laps of the three-hour race on Sunday. Sipes commanded the lead early on, which proved to be a big advantage due to the dusty course conditions. As a result, Sipes was able to set a fast pace on the opening lap where he eventually put a one-minute gap on the second place rider of Kailub Russell.
Sipes and Russell traded off momentum for the remainder of the race but in the end it was Sipes who prevailed with a 33 second victory in the overall running.
"The track was super rocky and pretty dusty, I wouldn't say I really liked it all that much but I've always done pretty well there," Sipes said. "I've had such an up and down year, I've been really frustrated but I just decided I would go for it - win or crash - and I did both! I got a really good start and I figured I would sprint as fast as I could so I could get a lead and not have to eat dust. I pulled a big lead on the first lap, and even bigger on the second lap but I had one crash that lost some time. I pitted on the fourth lap and our dump can got stuck and gas poured all over me, but we got her back going and held it all the way to the finish. It feels awesome to get my first win in GNCC, I feel like it's been a real struggle to get here and I've worked really hard and it's been frustrating but it's all worth it when you win one. It feels cool that I've won a Supercross, ISDE Individual Over, National Enduro and GNCC - I feel really blessed to be able to do and I want to keep this momentum going."
XC2 250 Pro (16-24)
Both Coastal Racing/Husqvarna riders got off to a great start but it was Michael who jumped out to the early lead on the opening lap, with DeLong following close behind in 3rd. DeLong pushed his way into the 2nd place position by lap three, while Michael dropped back to 3rd and the duo maintained those positions for the remainder of the three-hour race.
DeLong's runner-up position was enough to vault the Pennsylvania native back into the 2nd place position in the XC2 Championship Standings, while Michael dropped one point back to 3rd with two rounds remaining in the series.
FMF XC3 125 Pro-Am
Jack Edmondson got off to a 2nd place start in the XC3 class where he battled with multi-time GNCC Champion Paul Whibley for the first few laps. Edmondson eventually dropped into the 3rd place position just before the halfway point as he began feeling the effects of the hot weather. After three tough hours of racing, Edmondson was able to hold strong to capture a solid 3rd place finish in the stacked division.
"Things didn't go too well for me this weekend - I started off okay but I let the heat and the toughness of the track get the better of me," Edmondson said. "I made the finish - and more importantly - the podium - to finish 3rd for the day. I'm still working to get back to where I need to be but I'm happy to improve on the last round's race."
