Layne Michael Leads the Coastal Racing Husqvarna Team to a 2 nd Place Finish at Mountaineer Run GNCC

Thursday, September 29, 2016 | 3:15 PM

Husqvarna-backed Coastal Racing's Layne Michael had a stand-out performance on Sunday with a strong 2nd place finish in the XC2 Pro Lites class at the Mountaineer Run GNCC. Michael led five of the seven laps in his class, while holding the overall lead in the opening laps of the three-hour race.

As the flag dropped for the XC2 Pro Lites class in the 1 p.m. afternoon race, it was Coastal Racing's Craig DeLong who captured the class holeshot aboard his Husqvarna TC250. DeLong led the way on the opening lap before his teammate, Layne Michael, made the pass to overtake the lead before lap one was complete.

Michael gained much traction from there, powering his Husqvarna FC250 into the overall lead on time adjustment as he navigated through the familiar West Virginia terrain. Michael continued his charge to lead the first two hours of the race before dropping back to the 2nd place position around the two-lap board. From there, Michael maintained a close position to the leader where he ultimately finished 2nd place in the XC2 Pro Lites class.

"It's always the goal to be in the center of the box but I'm really happy with the way I rode, especially in the first half of the race. Trevor was riding well at the end there and it was tough to stay with him but all-in-all it's a positive ride and we gained some valuable points."

Meanwhile, DeLong maintained a top-four position for a majority of the race as he really began a hard charge toward a podium position on the final lap. As he approached striking distance of the 3rd place rider, DeLong ended up running of out fuel with only a few miles until the finish line. DeLong was able to receive enough gas to make it to the finish, where he ultimately placed 6th in the class for the day.

"It's not what we wanted and we definitely gave up points to Trevor Bollinger but we're going to rebound this weekend in Ohio," DeLong said. "I was making up some time up on 3rd during the last lap and it was just a miscommunication with the pit crew that resulted in me running out of gas about three miles from the finish."

With two rounds remaining, DeLong sits in 2nd in the XC2 Pro Lites Championship with Michael close behind in 3rd.

It was a long day for XC1 Pro rider Ryan Sipes at Round 11, who experienced bike issues that ultimately slowed down his normal pace. Sipes didn't have the best jump off the start but he quickly worked his way into the lead position on the opening lap. Shortly after assuming the lead, Sipes realized that he lost his brakes and was forced to pull into the pits for a repair. The crew swapped out his brakes and Sipes returned to racing.

Things didn't get better from there as Sipes experienced another issue that ultimately caused him to slow down in order to finish the race.

"With two laps to go I couldn't even wheelie over a ditch or a log or anything," Sipes said. "Basically the best thing I could do was ride around and that's the fastest I could go. I know I had some speed and I was ready to be on the podium and ready to be up front, it just got held up for a week. I'm looking forward to making it happen this weekend at Powerline Park."
