The biggest two-day sporting event in Burke County, the annual AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series dirtbike and ATV races presented by Maxxis, is set for Saturday and Sunday at Steele Creek Campground. The campground is located about 11 miles north of Morganton off N.C. 181.
The annual event is the GNCC’s third of 13 championship races this season. The event gets underway at 8 a.m. both days with youth races, the amateurs take the track at 10 a.m., and pro races are at 1 p.m. Admission is $20 for a weekend pass and $10 for ages 6 to 11 with ages 5 and under admitted free.
Among the local riders in action is nationally-ranked Trevor Bollinger, a former U.S. junior world trophy team. Bollinger finished second in his XC2 Pro Lites series in 2014 and third last year but has already won in Georgia and Florida to start this season and claimed the A Open 2-stroke series title last weekend at a Mid East Hare Scramble event at Antioch Speedway.
