Greg Covert had a great 2014 season coming away with 3rd place in the ultra-competitive College-A class. Of course, as with any racer, Greg was hungry for the championship and throughout the season was engaged in the tight battle all the way down to the wire. We caught up with Greg to talk about his 2014 season, plans for 2015, and more.
GNCCRacing.com: How's it going today?
Greg Covert: Everything is great today! Just my normal routine. Welding class in the morning, then off to work for rest of the day. Then of course those late night hours in the garage.
How's your winter going?
Winter has been flying by, that's for sure. Not much snow where we are so the sleds have been parked but hopefully not for much longer. I definitely want to get out and do some riding on those soon.
What kind of training have you been doing?
My brother and I have been hitting the gym hard four of five times a week. Without seat time over the winter it’s definitely a disadvantage but we are doing way more to prepare than we ever have before.
Are you ready to get back racing?
I just want to ride so bad, you don't even know!!
So tell us how your 2014 season went.
My 2014 season had its ups and downs but overall it was a great year. Some mechanical issues and some rider errors set me back. The championship was definitely open for grabs the last four races but I just couldn't make it happen. My first year in the AA class locally went great, I had a couple overall wins edging out XC2 rider Marty Christofferson a few times but everyone knows how fast and consistent he is.
You College-A class guys were in a pretty close battle throughout the season, how was that?
The competition is always great! There were at least 7 or 8 of us that could win any given race. All of us are good buddies with no harsh feelings after the race, which is how it should be. It doesn’t get any better than battling with someone, or even your brother, for a top amateur finish.
Obviously everyone wants to win a championship but 3rd is still pretty awesome. How'd that feel?
It definitely felt good to get a top three finish but I'm ready for a national championship, and I know my Dad is too (laughs) I had a win and took the top amateur finish at Loretta Lynn’s, which was a great feeling that I want more of!
So what are your plans for 2015?
Well, after talking to our main sponsors, as a team we decided to stay back in the College-A class, which I think is a smart decision because in that class you need consistency, which I just didn't have last year. I think I have the speed but I'm still young so there’s many more years to be fought up in the pro ranks.
What do you hope to accomplish in 2015?
I really want consistency and good finishes each and every round. Hopefully that means a championship and top amateur at the end of the year.
Alright before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank?
I’d like to give a huge thanks to my very caring and loving parents. They would do anything for my brother and I, and I know they want to see us succeed as much as we want to. My brother and his girlfriend’s family are huge supporters as well, without them it would be very tough making it to all 28 races we made it to last year. Hygear Suspension has been helping with our suspension set up and other parts since we started racing and the guys over there really know what they are doing. Waynesburg Yamaha has also been a big help, Jay, their parts guy, really has it going on and without him I don't know what we would be doing. Moto-Xperts has been our power house since we’ve been on the 450 with very little issues. Houser Racing just started helping us out this year, which is great. Spider Graphix will be keeping our bikes looking fresh for each round and they’re a new sponsor this year, as well as Fly Racing. Then of course ITP tires, Scott goggles, IMS, and RJR.
