KR4 Endures a Scorcher at The Little Brown Jug National Enduro

The penultimate round of the 2014 NEPG AMA National Enduro Championship was hosted over Labor Day Weekend by the Greenville Enduro Riders Association in Union, South Carolina, and it was a HOT one! With temperatures nearing the century mark and high humidity increasing the sweat factor, all 500 competitors of the sold-out event had their work cut out for them to make it to the finish line.
Season-regular Jubal Brown had an okay day, but as was the case with most competitors, he had some trouble dealing with the heat. Jubal finished 6th in Open A.
It was a hot one out there today! I hydrated well all week and did all the right things today to keep my body properly fueled, but I’m just not used to conditions like this. I rode a fair race and kept it upright all day, but I was never able to push like I wanted. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we enjoy a milder climate at the last round in Indiana.
Mike Pillar also made the trek to South Carolina to contest the 250A division. After riding his CR125 in Pennsylvania, Mike brought his CRF250R to do work at the Little Brown Jug. Mike rode well but took a few soil samples throughout the day and lost some time. He still finished and impressive third place in his class.
Despite the heat and humidity, I was able to power through and be pretty solid today. I definitely wasn’t used to the thick dust and loose, powdery dirt, but I think the GNCC-style final test really suited me and helped move me up in the standings. Overall, it was a decent day, and I look forward to the last round being a little closer to the conditions I am used to at home.
Our two favorite Grass Roots riders joined us again in South Carolina. Both Chris Bottomy and Scott McCullough left the hard work to us as they drove a car to save on fuel and let us haul their bikes. Riding on Row 7, both riders combatted the heat well and put in good rides.
Chris carded an 11th place finish in 200A and had this to say, “It was a hot day, but it’s not too different from the weather in my home state of Florida. I have been riding this enduro for over 25 years, and I always enjoy coming back each year.”
Scott contested the 250C division and earned 12th position for the day. “The first section was tough and it was hard for me to get in a rhythm. Overall, I enjoyed the day, and it was great to ride on the same row with a good friend from Georgia. I am excited to see all of my KR4 friends again in two weeks at the season finale.”
