Five-Time GNCC Champion Scott Summers Elected to AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame

Racer Productions and the entire AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis and sanctioned by AMA would like to congratulate five-time GNCC Champion Scott Summers on being elected to the 2014 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.

Hailing from Petersburg, Ky., Scott Summers is one of the most decorated champions in GNCC Racing. Summers captured three consecutive GNCC National Championships in 1990, 1991 and 1992 against some of off-road’s biggest names, before coming back to claim two additional titles in 1996 and 1997.

As a racer, Summers amazed worldwide by capturing wins on a Honda XR600, which was considered too heavy to win in tight woods terrain. Summers found the four-stroke power characteristics perfect for his style, though, and he served as a pioneer by demonstrating that thumpers could indeed win races against two-strokes. He, perhaps, contributed even greater things to the sport off the track, building a professional and media-savvy image that was far ahead of its time. Summers brought the relatively low-profile world of eastern woods racing into the mainstream, and a great deal of the GNCC Series’ growth throughout the 1990s can be traced to Summers’ promotional efforts. Summers launched woods racing from high-end recreation to an actual profession where riders could make a full-time living, and that imprint has carried forward with every GNCC Champion since.

The off-road racing icon was elected to the Off-Road Competition category and will be inducted at the 2014 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Friday, Oct. 17, in Orlando, Florida. The induction ceremony is part of the AMA National Convention being held in conjunction with the American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) Oct. 16-19.

Summers is the fourth member of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame class of 2014 to be announced. AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers are selected through a nomination and voting procedure that includes ballots cast by living Hall of Fame members, members of the American Motorcyclist Association and AMHF boards of directors, and members of, and advisers to, the Hall of Fame category committees.

The 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series is on a summer break until September 6 and 7, when racing resumes in New Berlin, New York with the Can-Am Unadilla GNCC. For more information on the series, visit www.gnccracing.com.
