KR4 Performance Race Report from Mountaineer Run
Monday, June 2, 2014 | 9:50 AM
Fortunately for the KR4 Arrive-n-Ride Team many of its riders are “rock garden” specialists as several showed their expertise in handling a rock and boulder-strewn course in Masontown, WV. In spite of the virtually treacherous conditions that drew many harsh comments - the KR4 rock-riders relished with the opportunity to show their wares. The Masontown event marked the 7th stop of the 13 races in the 2014 season.
As an added bonus KR4 treated the troops to a deliciously catered “Race-Food” gathering on Saturday afternoon - indicative of the kind of extensive support and breath of service a professional program such as KR4’s has to offer.
Youth Race:
Grant Davis 65cc (7-9) was absolutely on fire in the morning youth race and won his class. As was said earlier the rock-infested course was a challenge for all the competitors but Grant was able to handle the rocky conditions with aplomb. After rocketing off the start with the holeshot Grant was never headed during the 5-lap race and led every lap. Comments over the radios from the extensive group of team KR4 spotters along the course included, “Grant just handled a rocky hill climb like the overall leader of the race!”
KR4 Youth Results:
- Grant Davis: 65cc (7-9) - 1st

10 o’clock race:
Newly signed KR4 Arrive-n-Ride rider Brook Cosner had a standout performance in the women’s pro WXC class. After a mid-pak start into the woods Brook settled into a steady pace and finished the first lap in 8th. From there she stepped it up on the second lap to 7th – but then pulled out all the stops to finish the fourth and final lap in 5th!! Almost two and one-half minutes ahead of 6th!! Brook was reeling with excitement after the race and pleased with the performance of her KR4 prepped KTM 200 XC.
Butch Molnar won the Super Senior B (45+) class race by almost three minutes! Butch got the holeshot and never put a wheel wrong during the two-hour race. Butch is leading the point’s chase in his class and has a total of three wins for the year.
Conner Keegan and Brittan Laird’s races in the 200C Schoolboy (12-15) class were also stellar performances of the KTM 150 XC riders. Both riders handled the rocky conditions with confidence and finished in 3rd and 4th positions respectively.

Pro Race:
The Mountaineer is set in the West Virginia Mountains with lots of rocky up hills and fast straights that go from woods patch to woods patch. With an 11-mile race track and temps in the 70's it was going to be a tough race. XC2 KR4 riders Nick Davis and Shane Hufford got off to great starts only to have Shane go down on one of the rocky hills just off the start. Nick was in 4th as they headed into the woods.
Nick checked into the finish in 2nd place and Shane was in 10th. Dust was flying in the open field sections but the woods where awesome. On laps 2 and 3 Nick was still in second place with Shane moving up to 7th place. At the gas stop Nick was in and out but Shane was starting to have a rear break issue as the rear brakes were starting to come and go. The 3-hour pace was working on Nick but he held strong to finish in 4th place by the time the checkered flag flew. Shane stopped again to have brake fluid put in his brakes and finished 14th.
Louw Schmidt from South Africa came to the Masontown GNCC to make his dream come true and race in the USA. Louw raced the XC2 class on a KR4 Arrive-n-Ride KTM 250XC. Louw's day started with a mid-pack start but got caught up in the first few dusty straights and lost some time. Louw was all smiles when KR4 pitted him on lap 3 for fuel and a cold drink. Louw finished in 21st in the highly competitive XC2 class.
The KR4 AnR team has 3 riders in the 250B class including Colin Keegan, Kurt Palmer, and Coleman Brinson. The teammates got off to great starts as Kurt was in 5th, Colin 6th, and Coleman 7th going into the woods. Colin looked set to make it 4 wins in a row but had trouble on lap 2 and saw 2nd place close the gap and pass him just before the finish. However, on the last lap Uncle Brian told Colin to put the hammer down and that’s what he did re-passing for 1st and pulling out a 30 second lead. Both Coleman and Kurt had a few problems during the race and ended up 19th and 18th respectively.
Afternoon Bike Race Results:
- Colin Keegan: 250 B - 1st
- Nick Davis: XC2 - 4th
- Shane Hufford: XC2 Pro Lites - 14th
- Kurtis Palmer: 250 B - 18th
- Coleman Brinson: 250 B - 19th
- Louw Schmidt: XC2 - 21st
