Zach Love has had a solid season so far and holds the 250-A class points lead. With an impressive 8th place overall finish in the Kentucky mud, Zach heads to The Limestone 100 looking for another top amateur finish. We caught up with Zach to talk about his 2013 season, and more.
GNCCRacing.com: How's it going today?
Zach Love: It’s good! Just got home from work, and I'm about to head to the gym.
How did the clean-up from Kentucky go?
It took some time but we got everything cleaned up, sorted out and ready for Limestone.
So tell everyone a little about yourself.
Well, I live here in Lebanon, Indiana and work for Filson Earthwork, which is an excavation company a few miles from home. I work all week to race on the weekend, and that pretty much takes up most of my time. I love racing because that's what I look forward to all week long and can’t wait to go to the track every weekend.
How did you get started in the offroad world?
The first time I ever raced was in 2006 on a TTR 125 at the Ironman. I ended up dead last, which was not what I was hoping for. I’ve been moving up and getting better equipment from year to year. I just keep pushing, trying to get better, and improve my equipment along the way.
What have been some of the highlights of your career?
In 2009 I won the 200 C class, 2010 I won 200 B, and 2011 I won 200 A. Racing though the qualifiers and making it to the main event at the Tennessee Knockout last year was great. Then finishing in the top 10 was just a bonus.
So tell us about The Mammoth. You had a pretty solid ride!
Yeah, The Mammoth went great for me. I love the mud. Growing up we did a lot trail ridding in Kentucky with friends so I couldn't have asked for better conditions. I feel really confident about our program this year with my bike and my personal preparation. I think I’ve done all my homework, I felt great and was confident that everything else was in order to get the win.
How did it feel to finish so high in the overall?
That was awesome! I didn't expect that at all. When I stopped to pit my dad told me I was running 9th overall and that lit a fire in me to push hard to the finish. I ended up 8th, which is by far one of my best career accomplishments.
What about the conditions. What did you think?
I loved the conditions. I always do better when it is more technical, so the muddy, rocky conditions were great.
You've got a good lead in 250A points now. What is it going to take to hold onto that lead?
I want to make sure I’m at least in the top three in the class and continue to work forward in the overall. I’m looking forward to some of the upcoming tracks with a couple being close to home. Then the West Virginia tracks are always fun with a high level of challenge.
What is the competition in 250A like?
There's a lot of talent this year with the last two years mini champions and other great riders that move up from the B classes, so competition is definitely pretty stiff.
Do you have any idea of what you hope to do next season?
I’ll be riding in the XC2 class next year and see how we can do there.
What do you hope to accomplish the rest of this season?
I would like to try and get as many top amateur finishes as I can, and just push hard for the 250 A championship.
What about beyond 2013? What do you hope to accomplish down the road.
I hope to race as long as I can, and as long as I'm having fun and have the money to do so, I’ll be there every weekend ready to go.
Alright, before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank?
I’d like to thank my family first because none of this would be possible without their support. I’d also like to thank my sponsors. Maxxis, FMF, Dirt Tricks, Ride PG, Fly, Clock Work, Spykes KTM, Team IXCR and Scott McKeand.
