Welcome to Quick Fill.
Being on the road three weekends out of the month tends to make the time spent at home that much more precious. But it seems like any chance I get to take a weekend off from traveling, I usually find myself back in the car for another road trip. I think there’s something in the blood of racers that makes us all a little restless when we’re stuck in one place for too long. Which is why I chose to head back to my home state of Illinois on one of the few weekends I’m not already traveling for work, and I couldn’t be more excited.
This time, instead of writing Quick Fill in the passenger seat of the Mid State Chevy, I’m riding co-pilot in my very own Ford Focus while my boyfriend leads the way. We’ve made it as far as Indiana and I’m already having wild and wonderful withdrawals. The best part about this trip—besides getting to see my family of course—is the abundance of Steak N Shakes in the area. I’m so looking forward to downing a cup of chili and an oreo milkshake. Driving through Indiana makes me regret not bringing my dirtbike because I forgot how many awesome places there are to ride around here!
So I’ve been 25 for less than a day and I really don’t feel any different. I was thinking about renting a car for the sheer fact that I don’t have to pay a surcharge anymore, but then I remembered that I have my own car to drive. I honestly wasn’t thinking too much about today being my birthday until I started receiving so many Facebook posts and text messages from all the amazing people. I tell ya, it makes a girl feel pretty special to get so many wonderful messages so thank you to everyone who made me feel like a queen on my halfway-to-fifty-day!
Anyways, enough about me. Let’s talk about motorbikes. I received a message regarding an injury update on SuperMini rider Christopher Venditti. Christopher crashed pretty hard passing lapped traffic on a fast section at Big Buck and after cartwheeling 30 feet, he managed to get up and fight back to second overall in the Youth race. Chris had an ortho visit this week where he found out he raced with his shoulder partially out of socket and a grade one AC tear. Not to mention, he rode with a rear flat last round. It sounds like he’s resting this week and will be back by Kentucky. Best of luck to Chris and hopefully the bad luck is behind him!
North Carolina’s Braxton McGee has been on a roll this season, claiming his second straight Youth overall win at Big Buck. The competition is getting more and more intense in the youth ranks every year and those riders are flying out there.
Just a quick reminder that next round in Kentucky will be Central time so don’t forget to factor that in if you’re coming from the eastern side. Another thing, beginning at Round 5, we’re implementing a dead engine start for all ATV Youth classes EXCEPT the 70 CVT and 90 Limited. So please keep that in mind and be sure your rider is ready to start that engine by next weekend.
I’ll turn it over to Mr. Chuck LeMaster so he can fill you guys in on the latest from Team Faith.
Thanks, Jen! Last week we announced in Quick Fill that we would be tie-dying t-shirts with #112 Charlie Mullins. That was a huge hit! A lot of people showed up and we had tie-dye ink all over everything!
As we look forward to The Mammoth, Team Faith will be hosting a kickball tournament and cookout! This is for youth of all ages – parents are encouraged to participate with their kids. Online signups are underway right now. Click HERE to sign up. Presently, there are 4 teams competing. #557 Kailub Russell vs. #1 UTV Champ William Yokley vs. #514 Steward Baylor vs. #9 Jordan Ashburn! Sign up early to get your friends/parents on the same team.
We are rounding up prizes right now – it’s sure to be a big time! See you at the starting line Saturday evening at 6:30 PM.
Thanks again Chuck. We appreciate all you do!
I’ll pass it along to Jared Bolton for a little race talk. Hope everyone has a great weekend!
And here’s @JaredBolton:
It almost seems hard to believe, but we’re now officially four rounds into the 2013 season. It really seems like it was just last week that we were kicking things off in Florida, and now the series is starting to head a little further north soon with The Mammoth GNCC in Kentucky next weekend. While time may be flying by, that’s had no effect on the racing because we’ve already seen some great battles and close races all the way across the board. Pro and amateur, bike, quad or UTV, youth, micro or adult, it doesn’t matter. The racing has been great all around.
Another thing I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about so far this season has been the tracks. I bet I heard more good things about the course at Big Buck than almost any race that I’ve ever been to. It really seems like an overwhelming majority of people truly enjoyed it and the only complaints I heard were on things that are out of anyone’s control, such as the course getting rough at the end of the day. But hey, that’s something you come to expect and the bottom line is, a day at the track is better than, well, pretty much anything.
I mentioned the great racing action, and this season has been a pretty epic year for the Women’s bike class. The addition of Kacy Martinez and Jessica Patterson to the series has really shaken things up. In addition to the talent of Maria Forsberg and other threats such as Ashley Copeland, Mandi Mastin, Becca Sheets, Hannah Otto, Rachel Gutish and an entire list of others, and the women’s class could be one of the most stacked classes in the series this year.
The ladies put on a heck of a race at Big Buck too. Maria Forsberg jumped out front early with a pretty commanding lead but Kacy Martinez would catch up to her and eventually even make a pass for the lead. Of course, it didn’t end there as Jessica Patterson also kept them honest and challenged as well. Martinez would end up tangling with a lapped rider though, and Maria would go on to snag her third win of the season ahead of Kacy and Jessica rounding out the top 3, respectively.
The action didn’t end there either. The XC1 class would end up seeing a pretty impressive race for the win as well too. The KTM teammates of Charlie Mullins and Kailub Russell would once again jump out front with Kailub holding the advantage for most of the race. Charlie would finally make his way into the lead and for a while it looked like he was going into his old “Checkout Charlie” mode but KR ended up closing the gap up some by the end of the race.
The interesting racing didn’t end with them either. Josh Strang ended up getting a stick stuck in his face and stopped right in front of me as I was filming for RacerTV Live and with a little assistance from Dave Scearce, Strang just yanked it out and kept going. Thad Duvall and Chris Bach would both come from behind to work their way up to challenging for podium positions with Paul Whibley.
When it was all said and done, Mullins ended up with the win over Russell while Duvall hung in there for third and Bach would take a solid fourth over Whibley. The big question is, how did this shake up the point standings? Well, Charlie Mullins now holds a 10 point lead over Kailub Russell while Chris Bach is continuing his solid top 5 finishes and holds down third over Josh Strang in fourth, and Thad Duvall in fifth.
As for the XC2 class, the early laps would be a pretty hard battle between Andrew Delong, Jed Haines, Grant Baylor and Aaron Plessinger while Shane Hufford stayed close to them as well. The XC2 class has been pretty interesting to watch this year and Big Buck was no different. Delong started pulling a pretty solid lead and had worked his way up pretty close to the top XC1 guys but ended up suffering a pretty hard crash which would cost him a little time in the process. However, it didn’t cost him too much time, as he was still able to hold on to the top spot and take the class win ahead of Grant Baylor and Steele Creek winner, Aaron Plessinger. Jed Haines and Shane Hufford would be left to battle for fourth and fifth, while Haines ended up with the advantage. Defending XC2 champ Jason Thomas had a rough ride but was able to salvage a sixth place finish.
This weekend there’s quite a few opportunities to do some racing. The National Enduro Series will be back in action in Westpoint, Tennessee. Can Charlie Mullins hold on to snag the win again and further his points lead? Or can Andrew Delong snag another win? Oh, and you can never rule out the enduro aces such as Russell Bobbitt, Mike Lafferty and Nick Fahringer. Could be interesting to watch unfold!
That’s going to do it for me this week before I overload everyone with too much info. Until next time, Bolt-On out!
And here's @HotRodney22:
Round 4 in the history books and the seasons seems to be off to a fever pitch. The drama is beginning to build and we have the possibility of historic season in the making once again. The major historic mark that some are watching at the moment is the accumulating win tally for the now 4-Time GNCC champ Chris Borich. This past Saturday Borich notched not only another win but finds himself one step closer to being the elite record holder of the most ever GNCC wins, bike or quad.
The records currently read that Barry Hawk has 67 wins (48 ATV/19 Bike) and Bill Ballance has 68 (ATV) wins and Chris Borich’s win this past weekend brought his total up to a total of 63 wins. That is now only five wins away from a tie and with the way things have been going; there is no reason to believe that it cannot actually come to fruition during this season. Another interesting note to this is that if you look at the depth of talent of the current crop of up and coming riders in the GNCC ranks, it could be a long time before anyone breaks this record once it is set. Another thing to think about is that if/once he breaks the record the totals could add up to even more before he is finished. The only question for many is how many wins can Chris Borich total before he is done?
Historically on the Bike side of things, Scott Summers has the most wins with 46 overall throughout his career. Rodney Smith is second with 33 while Ed Lojak and Fred Andrews have 25 each. Then rounding out the top 5 all time bike wins record is Scott Plessinger with 21. As of this past Sunday’s win, Charlie Mullins moved into a tie for the 7th with Shane Watts and Juha Salminen each having a total of 17. Theoretically Charlie could actually move into the top five this season with only 4 more wins and the way things have been going lately, this could be a reality realized very soon. And really going out on a limb, but if Charlie can achieve a sweep the rest of the overalls, he could move into 3rd by season’s end. Farfetched but right now it is within the realm of possibilities.
This past weekend’s Big Buck GNCC was the 17th running of this now historical event and yet again it left us with some great memories. I guess the biggest news of the Saturday racing for me was when Westley Wolfe made history taking his first ever morning overall race win. Wolfe and the rest of the Schoolboy 13-15 class has been showing some major promise and speed this season flirting with the possibilities of a win already this season. It was the Big Buck where the history was written though and Westley was joined by fellow Schoolboy 13-15 class rider Cody Collier on the morning overall podium with a 2nd. U2 Class winner Michael Swift was 3rd overall.
Westley Wolfe will be back in action this weekend as he will head to Ballance Moto-X Park outside of Bowling Green Kentucky for round 3 of the Mtn. Dew AMA ATV Motocross Nationals. As mentioned before he is trying to capture a national championship in both GNCC and ATV MX which is something that so far has not been accomplished by anyone to our knowledge. The thing is that Wolfe is not the only one working on this honor. Jordan Digby from the Youth ranks is doing the same. Jordan tried last season but had his hopes cut short with season ending injury. At least a third rider is working on the same feat in the afternoon GNCC races as well. It is William “Duck” Lloyd riding for the JB/Cheerwine race team. As we mentioned before, Duck is contesting the Junior A 22+ class in GNCC and a couple different classes in the ATVMX. Duck actually leads points in the Junior A classes of both series.
The big news for the XC2 Pro Am ATV races is that rookie Brycen Neal is the “Real Deal”. Brycen fought his way back from a horrible start and as much as a one minute and twenty second gap behind race leader Pat McGuire. McGuire seemed to have a second race in the bag when a couple of problems on the final laps allowed the hard charging rookie to make the pass and take the win. McGuire ended up third in the end, but the most exciting part of this race was when the top three finished 2.328 seconds from 1st to 3rd. That is tight and exciting and kudos to Landon Wolf who rode a steady race and latched on with Neal in the drive to the front in the closing lap.
And again as exciting the XC1 bike race was with Mullins, Russell and Duvall. The excitement was once again provided by the XC2 Pro Lites as Aaron Plessinger who is racing a limited schedule in 2013 provided some last lap last turns excitement battling with Grant Baylor to the checkers for 2nd in the class. Andrew Delong dominated the class all day but the battles that waged behind him were once again classified epic by anyone who watched it all unfold.
Also a big shout out to Charlie Mullins and his wife Rachelle for their leading of the night time youth activities with Team Faith. The Mullins’ hosted a Tie-Dye party which brought out a host of kids. The next cool and exciting Saturday evening you need to plan for with Team Faith is when we head to The Mammoth next week. Team Faith and a few are teaming up to provide its biggest and best youth night yet. I got this message from GNCC Pastor Chuck LeMaster:
We are hosting a kickball tournament and cookout at The Mammoth! We need some help with food and supplies. If you can help, please sign up. Also - who's willing to loan a grill and do the cooking?! (Those poor kids don't want me burning their hot dogs!) If you want to help out you can sign up here.
I understand there will be several GNCC celebrities on hand having fun and enjoying the evening with the GNCC families. I would suggest to come on over if you get the chance and we will have more details next week.
That’ll do it for now. Till next time, God Bless Your Heart and All Your Vital Organs!
