Team UXC Racing Report - The General

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 | 4:55 PM

Heading into the cooler climate of Georgia Team UXC had their work cut out for them. With proper planning the team was ready to not only get some much needed seat time on the Gen2 Can-Am Renegade XXC but also to try the Maverick out in the red Georgia clay. The temperature rose to an impressive 70 degrees but with a northeasterly wind it still felt like it was 60 in the shade.

On the starting grid Team UXC had an impressive showing as Tayton Swift, Michael Swift, Don Higbee and Carl Vella all made the perspective fields. Tayton would race his DS90X in the Youth morning 90-Limited class. Tayton was able to work his way up to 4th but after a last lap fuel issue Tayton would finish the day in a respectable 7th place in his class.

Team UXC racings point man Michael Swift rolled his Can-Am Renegade XXC out to the start line in the U2 class hoping to leave Florida’s race behind him. “ Here in Georgia the Team UXC Renegade was on rails and grabbing 2nd position off the starting line in my class was a great start. Our Renegade was rolling hard but smooth through the east Georgia terrain and by the three-mile marker we had gained the lead position in our class. I set my sights on the few remaining racers in front of me picking them off one by one. The power of this Rotax motor is incredible,” said Swift. Michael Swifts Can-Am Renegade XXC in combination with the Custom Axis shocks have really shown a new light as to what this set up is capable of. The first and second lap had Swift leading the entire field of racers in the overall position. Although his next closest competitor was only 16 seconds behind on the first lap he had pulled to 25 seconds on the second lap so the gap was widening.  It was then Swift says his mechanical issues crept back in. With driveline issues being the problem a charismatic Swift said, “ We will just have to figure this one out and get back in the game in North Carolina’s Steele Creek”. Swift managed to officially score in the 5th position for the race. “ Its exciting to know what this machine is capable of and I cannot wait to get a full race in to see the real finish for our Can-Am Renegade XXC!” exclaimed Swift.

Team UXC Racings Don Higbee took his Generation two Can-Am Outlander to a fourth place finish in the 4X4 Senior class at Georgia. “I had a good start and even worked my way into fourth place but on lap two I clipped a tree and was ejected from the machine. The crash rung my bell just a little but I was able to get back on my Team UXC Can-Am Outlander and pick off the two places that had passed me during the crash. It was then I noticed the crash had taken out my power steering and that made the rest of our race a bit difficult. You never know how much you depend on that power steering until it is gone. I also realized my hydration pack had burst so I was out of water as well” says Higbee. Having never raced in the eastern United States Don will undoubtedly have a new respect for the remaining rounds of the GNCC series. Don says, “Our machine is working flawless and I will be ready for North Carolina!”

Team UXC racings Carl Vella was also competing in the 4X4 senior class along side teammate Don Higbee. Carl was able to grab 8th place on the start and even moved into the 6th place position during the race. “I am just having a great time racing and I cannot thank Michael Swift enough for his time and effort on my behalf. Although I have mainly raced desert type terrain, the GNCC series runs into the style of riding and similar environment as my practice trails back home. I learned really quickly that I need to practice my starts and learn to be more conservative of my energy during the race to be a little higher on the finish” Carl stated that he knows he needs to be more hydrated as the 70+ temps in Georgia revealed this lesson during the race. “I will be debuting a new more competitive machine in the next rounds of racing as Swift is building an all out fully tuned rig for me to race,” claimed Vella. Carl Vella was able to finish the race on his bone stock Can-Am Outlander in 6th so it could be a different ball game once the race ready machine hits the starting line.

Team UXC Racing also had their first race experience in the 2013 Can-Am Maverick as well. Racing in the XC2 the number 108 of Team UXC’s Michael Swift and David Jesse had a great start and would finish the General UTV race in tenth place. “ The world of UTV racing is very different and its something we have to get used to for sure. Learning a lap strategy as well as things like line choices will only make us faster” says Swift.

Team UXC Racing has a great presence at the track and with the addition of their new trailer it will be hard to miss them.
