Zac Nash is one of the many names that we saw up front in the ultra-competitive 250-A class in 2012. The Indiana native put in a solid season and ended up 4th in class points, just being edged out by Layne Michael in the last round. We caught up with Zac to hear about his 2012 season and more.
GNCCRacing.com: How's it going today?
Zac Nash: Pretty Good! Just got out of class, heading home now.
Can you believe another season is already in the books?
No, the year has flown by!
How did 2012 go for you?
It’s been a rough year for me. I came into the year with really high expectations after finishing really strong last year, but I didn’t do as well as I wanted. I had some strong rides at the beginning of the year, but I kind of fell apart in the middle of the season. Then I got it back together for the end of the year finishing a career best 17th overall at Loretta’s.
You had some really solid rides, but what would it have taken to snag some wins?
It’s a very competitive class and I just needed a little luck to go my way at the end of the race. I led my class and the overall amateur for several races but luck always seemed to get me at the end. I was in really good shape and felt strong the entire three hours. I just needed some luck. Making the change to the 250f mid-season seemed to be a good move and allowed me to get some of my best overall and class finishes at the end of the season.Ã
What was the competition in the 250-A class like this year?
The competition was gnarly! There are some really great riders in that class and I had a blast banging bars with them all year. Anyone could have come out on top so you had to be on the top of your game every weekend. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the guys. They are just as good of guys as they are racers.
Looking back, is there anything you would like to have changed about 2012?
Hindsight is always twenty-twenty, so there are a few things I would have changed, but I don’t like to stay in the past. I prefer to just focus on the future.Ã
What was your favorite part of 2012?
I had spring break from college the week before the Florida GNCC and I got to spend the week down there. I picked up my race bike for the season on the Tuesday before the first GNCC and drove all night down to the Baylor’s. We loaded up everything in my van and headed to Florida. We spent the week riding around in Florida and I had a blast!
What was it like being a part of the Obermeyer/Raines Racing/OffroadViking.com Team this season?
I feel very fortunate to be a part of the team. It allowed me to make some good connections with sponsors and see what it is like to ride on a team.
Do you have any plans for 2013 yet?
I plan to continue to represent my faithful sponsors in local events and select GNCC races. My main focus, however, will be on going to college.
What do you hope to accomplish in 2013?
In addition to going to college, I’m going to have some fun and try some new things such as triathlons, cycling races and maybe some mountain bike races as well. I want to do some things that I haven’t had the chance to do because I’ve been racing so much.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
I hope to get my Mechanical Engineering degree and get a job working in the dirt bike industry designing parts or bikes. Hopefully I will get a good job and be able to bring my dad and family to the GNCCs in a big freightliner motorhome someday. He always says he wants one of those (laughs)
So how did you get started in the off-road world?
My dad got me racing back when I was seven, but I started riding a four wheeler when I was three. My dad used to race four-wheelers, but he gave racing up when I started racing so we could afford to race. I started running the GNCCs back in 2006 in the Supermini 12-13 class and have worked my way all the way up to the 250-A class.
What has been the biggest accomplishment of your career?
Winning up the MAXC pro championship this year.
Alright, before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank the Lord for keeping me safe throughout the my career, my mom and dad for their continued support, and this season Obermeyer Yamaha, Raines Riding University, Offroadviking.com, Fly Racing, Fastway, Kenda, Acclerade, X Brand goggles, Pro Taper, Zip-Ty, Factory Connection, Unabiker Radiator Guards, EBC Brakes, Sunstar Chains and Sprockets, GYTR, Yamalube, TM design works, CV4, IMS Tanks, FMF Exhuast, Yamaha Generators, GE, Flat Tire Defenders, HBD Motographix. I would also like to thank all of the people that have helped me in the past.
