Westley Wolfe has come back from GNCC summer break with vengeance, and is making a name for himself as his rookie XC1 Pro season comes to a close. Prior to the start of the Mountaineer Run GNCC in Masontown, West Virginia, Wolfe was experiencing issues with his quad, but once the green flag waved it fired right up and lead him to his first career XC1 Pro holeshot.
Once he made it to the woods, a couple competitors got by him but Wolfe continued the battle for fourth. Around the midway point of the race, Wolfe got his second wind and battled against six-time GNCC Chris Borich. Even though Wolfe consistently stayed in fifth he was right on the verge of making the pass for fourth as the checkered flag came out.
Two weekends ago was the Powerline Park GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Wolfe started mid-pack, but struggled as soon as he entered the woods where he was rammed by another rider. The two were stuck together, allowing the rest of the class to pass them.
After getting untangled, Wolfe worked his way back up to ninth at the conclusion of the first lap, and latched on with some of this close competitors. When it was time for a pit stop, Wolfe’s crew was ultra-quick in Pro Row and he pulled out three positions ahead of where he was.
Wolfe attempted to make the pass but came together with a lapped rider and shot into a tree. Once he was back on track Wolfe sprinted to the finish and successfully completed the pass for sixth with just a mile to go in the race.
The 2017 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series concludes in two weeks, October 28, with the Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Wolfe continues to focus on a podium finish and sits ninth in the XC1 championship chase.
