Walker Fowler Race Report: Mountaineer Run GNCC

Saturday, September 30, 2017 | 4:40 PM

After wrapping up his third consecutive National championship at the previous round, Walker Fowler headed into this past weekend’s Mountaineer Run GNCC with the same intention to win. The eleventh round of the AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series was a hot one, with dust and rocky conditions adding to the level of difficulty that the Masontown, West Virginia round is known for.

With dust being the key factor, Fowler knew a good start would play a major role in the end result of the race. When the green flag waved, everyone was bumping wheels through the holeshot all trying to get into the woods first. Fowler managed to escape a potential first-turn accident after another rider came up on him and ended up going in the woods in third.

The leader made quick work, leaving second place and Fowler dealing with dreaded dust. Fowler soon felt pressure by one of his biggest competitors who managed to sneak by him for third. Knowing that it would be a long race if he didn’t get back by him immediately, Fowler stole the position back just two turns later. Just three miles into the race, Fowler secured second and began chipping away time to get to the leader.

Fowler snagged the lead just before the completion on the first lap after the leader pulled over due to arm pump. With the rocky West Virginia terrain, Fowler focused on being smooth through the rock gardens and sprinting on the rest of the terrain knowing that he would have to execute the plan to keep a lead over his other competitors.

“This plan worked up until the final lap when second place turned the jets on and was able to get on my rear tires with about three miles to go,” said Fowler. “He made an unfortunate error and gave me breathing room to the finish line for our 10th win in 11 races which I am beyond happy with.”

Fowler lined back up in the second split row for the UTV start, and got off to a favorable start, entering the woods physically in seventh. Fowler’s other competitors each had their own issues allowing for Fowler to create his own pace without immediate pressure.

While running second on adjusted time, Fowler shifted from physically fifth to fourth and was presented with a clear track where he picked up the pace in an attempt to catch the top three cars. Unfortunately, a tire setup issue ultimately took Fowler out of contention where he had to limp around of the track for the remaining two laps to try and score points toward the title.

“I've been running a little lower tire pressure for traction and comfort in my first season, but on lap three the rocks destroyed both rear wheels and tires and I started literally losing Tire Balls out of the holes in the tires.” Fowler managed to stay on the lead lap, but finished 26th overall which would make him ineligible for points.

“While this is not the finish we wanted, we learned some valuable lessons from our mistakes which will never happen again,” said Fowler. “Success isn't learned overnight, and in our first ever season driving the YXZ we are proving we have what it takes to contend for overall wins, which I honestly wasn't expecting. We are looking forward to the final two rounds as we continue to learn and only get stronger behind a steering wheel!”

GNCC Racing resumes next weekend, October 7, at the Powerline Park GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
