Westley Wolfe Race Report – Unadilla GNCC

NEW BERLIN, N.Y. (September 18, 2017) – The 2017 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series picked back up last weekend after a two-month hiatus for an unofficial summer break. After spending his summer racing the ATVMX series, Westley Wolfe was more than confident heading into round ten of the GNCC series in New Berlin, New York.

Once the green flag waved, Wolfe was fourth out of the first turn and behind some of the sport’s veterans. This start proved to be the major confidence boost that Wolfe has been looking for in his rookie season. Wolfe made a quick pass going into the woods and up a hill climb for third. Wolfe was eventually pushed back to fourth, but followed on the rear tires of third for a lap.

At the halfway point of the race Wolfe fell back to fifth, but moved back to fourth by the next lap. Wolfe set his sights on the six-time GNCC champion that was ahead of him in fourth and before long he was right behind him. Wolfe capitalized on the misfortune of Chris Borich and passed back for the final podium position with three laps remaining in the race. Knowing he was in a comfortable position over fourth, Wolfe continued to push up until there were seven miles and he made a small bobble and came off the motocross track. Unfortunately his competition had gained ground and was right there to steal the podium position before he was able to remount. With only a few miles remaining until the checkered flag Wolfe wasn’t able to get back into third and had to settle just off the podium in fourth.

Wolfe’s career best finish provides a glimpse of what’s the come in the remaining three rounds of the GNCC series where he currently sits ninth in the XC1 Pro class points, and 12th overall. The next GNCC race is this Saturday, September 23, in Masontown, West Virginia.

“I can’t even describe how good it feels to get a top-five finish,” said Wolfe. “I know I can run up there with those guys and my plan is to make it on the box by the end of the season.”
