MYERSVILLE, M.D. (July 11, 2017) – With nine rounds now complete, the 2017 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series, presented by Maxxis, an AMA National Championship, is now on an “unofficial” summer break until racing resumes on September 9 in New York.
Round eight took place Saturday, June 24, at Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia. Modeled after the famed Blackwater 100 and deemed “America’s Toughest Race” the venue is known for having a mind of its own – even the world’s best racers can struggle atop of the mountain.
With the unique live engine start on the main road, Westley Wolfe prepared for battle as usual. Due to the massive amount of racers that were stuck from the previous race, Wolfe’s race was postponed over an hour. Once the green flag waved, Wolfe got a great jump off the pavement and headed into the woods focused on landing a top-five finish. Unfortunately, Wolfe came up on a difficult section of the track’s hillside where he went off-course and wasn’t able to remount his quad and finish the race.
Heading into this past weekend’s race in Millfield, Ohio, Wolfe was back and looking for redemption at the John Penton GNCC. Wolfe rocketed off the line and once they checked through timing and scoring, he sat just outside the top-five in sixth. On the second lap Wolfe worked his way into fourth where he had to fend off two of the sport’s veterans.
Although they both got by within the next two laps, Wolfe learned some valuable skills and still finished the race in sixth – one of his best races to date. This result moved Wolfe up two places in the XC1 Pro class standings where he is currently ranked ninth, and 13th overall.
“With two months off from GNCC Racing, I plan on focusing on the ATVMX series,” said Wolfe. “Unlike the other pros, I’ll be maintaining my training regimen and by the time Unadilla comes I plan on finishing up on the box.”
