Race Report: Unadilla GNCC
September 14, 2016
The 2016 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series picked back up this past weekend, September 10, after a two-month “summer break.” Westley Wolfe had anything but a break as he stayed busy racing the ATVMX series, and his training paid off this past Saturday where he found himself standing on the XC2 Pro-Am podium at the conclusion of the two-hour Parts Unlimited Unadilla GNCC.
With the championship coming down to the wire, anticipation was at an all-time high when the green flag waved. Wolfe found himself stuck in the middle of the stacked field of riders. With near record breaking attendance numbers, the 10-mile course was full of riders and Wolfe found himself battling it out for the first two laps until he was able to use his motocross skills to his advantage and finally make the pass for third.
By the time Wolfe secured the third place position the leaders were already too far ahead. The unusual hot and humid New York conditions played a role in the latter half of the race where Wolfe decided to ride smart and focus on holding onto the final podium position. By the time he crossed the finish line, Wolfe had a four-minute gap on his closest competition.
“I’m pleased with my results at Unadilla,” said Wolfe. “The track was challenging with the amount of lappers, but it just feels great to get back into GNCC racing. My plan is to carry this momentum into the final three races and grab a few more wins.”
Wolfe will travel to Masontown, West Virginia in two weeks for the Mountaineer Run GNCC on September 24. Wolfe maintains third in the championship standings as he prepares for the 11th round of the 2016 season.
