Wednesday, June 1, 2016 | 1:25 PM
The Coastal Racing ATV and Side-by-Side team had a successful day of racing on Saturday at the John Penton GNCC. XC1 Pro ATV racer Brycen Neal captured a 3rd place finish in his home state of Ohio, while teammates Eli Kiger (College B ATV) and John Henry (XC2 Pro Sport SXS) each scored a podium finish in their respective classes.
ATV Report
Coastal Racing/MSR/Maxxis/Waynesburg Yamaha's Brycen Neal began the 1 p.m. Pro ATV race with an unfavorable start, where he entered the woods behind the rest of the class. That didn't faze Neal, though, as he pushed his way up to a top-five position by the end of lap one.
From there, Neal hooked up with Chris Borich and the duo continued their quest for a podium position. Just after the halfway point, Neal had clawed his way into the 3rd place position, with Borich right on his rear bumper. The 2nd place rider, Adam McGill, ran into an issue on the final lap, allowing Neal to then move into 2nd.
Heading into the final moments of the Sunday Creek Raceway MX track, it was Neal who had the advantage for 2nd place but Borich pulled the trigger over a double jump to pass Neal just before the finish line. In an all-out battle to the finish, Neal came across the line less than one second behind Borich to capture 3rd overall for the day.
"It was an awesome weekend at the John Penton," Neal said. "We've started dead last at three races this year and we came back and finished on the box at all three, so I'm confident that once we get the starts dialed in it will all come together and we can battle for a win. I'm looking forward to the next two races before break!"
Neal maintains the 3rd place position in the Overall Championship Standings with six podium finishes through the first seven rounds.
Coastal Racing/MSR/Maxxis/Waynesburg Yamaha team rider Eli Kiger got off to a great start in the College B (16-21) Class, where he rounded the opening lap in the 2nd place position. On lap two, Kiger battled back-and-forth with Joseph Yurchison for the 2nd place spot, where he finally broke away on lap three.
Kiger maintained his position on the final lap of the two-hour race where he was able to cross the finish line almost 20 seconds ahead of the 3rd place finisher. With three consecutive podium finishes behind him, including one victory, Kiger now sits 5th in the College B (16-21) Championship Standings.
Side-by-Side Report
In the XC1 Pro Class, Team Driver Sean Bogdan and his passenger Jade Kiger began on Row 2, where they powered their Coastal Racing/CST/OMF/Walker Evans/Racer Tech Polaris into the holeshot off the start. The duo kept their momentum early on as they maintained a top-ten position through the first two laps. However, on lap three they approached a bottle neck situation where they lost over one minute trying to get through. From there, Bogdan and Kiger dropped back to 15th where they were forced to navigate through lapped traffic while working their way through the pack.
Bogdan was able to climb back up to 10th place, where he finished for the day.
"The track was fast and my Walker Evans shocks were working really well, I had to drive smart but push the car to gain back my position," Bogdan said. "My Polaris RZR 1000S would not have been able to stay together if it wasn't for Racer-Tech and I wouldn't have gotten the traction I needed without my CST, OMF, Tireballs set-up. Thanks to my co-pilot Jade Kiger for making it very clear on which way to go."
Coastal Racing/Polaris/CST/OMF/Walker Evans/Racer Tech's Bill Patterson and his passenger "Skinny Mike" lined up on Row 4 aboard the Polaris RZR 1000. The duo grabbed the holeshot in their row and quickly charged ahead to begin picking off drivers in the row ahead. Near the end of lap one, Patterson noticed that he didn't have any brakes, making it very difficult to carry speed into the corners. Despite his bad luck, Patterson continued on for the remainder of the race, finishing 8th in the XC1 Pro Class and 12th Overall for the day.
"The track was great and the car was perfect," Patterson said. "We were flying down a straight when I noticed that I lost all brakes but we kept running hard and finished strong without them. I figured we would try to gain what points we could and one thing is for sure, this Coastal Racing Polaris is on point and we will be ready for the next round!"
In the XC1 Pro Championship Standings, Bogdan currently sits in the 7th place position, while Patterson holds 11th place.
XC2 Pro Sport driver John Henry didn't get the holeshot he had hoped for, as he entered the woods in the 4th place position. Henry was patient and worked his way up to 2nd place physically by the end of lap two but was then tasked with having to make passes through a very crowded trail.
Heading into the final lap of racing, Henry had put his Coastal Racing/Racer Tech machine into the 2nd place position until he got tied up in another team's crash that cost him some additional time late in the race. With that, Henry dropped into the 3rd place position, where he ultimately finished in the XC2 Pro Sport Class, while grabbing 9th overall for the day.
"Although it wasn't my best race, I have to be happy with how we finished considering the number of cars we had to work around every lap. It was a tight track with very limited passing opportunities in the areas we normally excel at. All in all, it was a frustrating day, but I have to be happy with the end result."
John Henry holds a solid 2nd place position in the XC2 Pro Sport Championship Standings with two rounds remaining in the series.
