Coastal/National Guard Race Report From Powerline Park

Tuesday, October 7, 2014 | 4:35 PM

Following a four-month break in the AMSOIL GNCC schedule, the Polaris/Coastal/CST/National Guard/Yoshimura/Yokley Racing Team returned to action on Saturday at the Powerline Park GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Team Driver William Yokley captured his second straight podium finish, while Team Driver Scott Kiger overcame obstacles from early in the race to ultimately finish seventh place in the XC1 Modified class.

Saturday’s weather conditions brought everything from cold temperatures, to rain, sleet, snow and sunshine but the track conditions were ideal. The early rain made for a slick surface, but with the help of CST tires, the Polaris/Coastal/CST/National Guard/Yoshimura/Yokley Racing team maintained the best traction all race long.

Both Polaris-backed teams lined up on the front row and as the green flag fell, Team Driver Scott Kiger powered his Polaris RZR XP 1000 to the early lead off the start. Kiger, along with passenger Layne Michael, led the first half of lap one before engaging in a battle with Big Country Powersports’ John Yokley for the lead.

“The 1000 lit up on the start and we just took off,” Kiger said. “I missed the fast line up the uphill on the opening lap and John got around me for the lead.”

William Yokley and his passenger Tina Yokley didn’t get the most favorable jump off the start, but the defending XC1 Modified Champions immediately began working through the pack. Once the duo was able to find a clear track ahead, they set their sights on catching the leaders.

“The Polaris RZR 900 never ceases to amaze me, everything on this car just works so good every time we’re out here,” Yokley said. “We didn’t have the best first and second lap. We got behind some guys and [Kyle] Chaney and John [Yokley] put a lot of time on us early on and once we broke loose we just didn’t have enough time to get up there and battle with them.”

Kiger ran into some issues on the second lap that caused him to lose time in the overall running. He was able to settle into the seventh place position just before the white flag, where he ultimately finished for the day.

“I was having a lot of fun out there, especially when the race started,” Kiger added. “I couldn’t have been happier with the car, it was handling great, running great and the track layout was really nice.”

Yokley continued his charge late in the race, where he ended up finishing third overall for the day.

“We had a pretty good run. Powerline Park is always a fun track, I enjoy it,” Yokley said on the podium. “I got a lot of fight left in me and I can’t wait to bring it to Ironman!”

With one round remaining, Scott Kiger and the Coastal National Guard team holds third place in the championship standings, only one point behind second place. Yokley and the Polaris National Guard team sits in fourth, just three points behind Kiger.
