Factory FMF/KTM Team rider Mike Lafferty took 2nd overall in his final professional career race at the last race of the AMA National Enduro Series to end his 20-year career on an all-time high.
The eight-time National Enduro Champion was celebrated by the Muddobbers Enduro crowd the night prior to the event as his friends and fans celebrated his successful career. Lafferty lined up for his final round full of nerves but ready to enjoy his final professional race.
“I really didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself,” stated Lafferty. “I just wanted to finish safely and enjoy my final ride.”
Lafferty impressed the crowd when he won the first special test of the day. His special test win in the first section marked his first test win this season. Lafferty proved he still has what it takes and followed up his first section win with test wins in the next two sections.
Heading into the fourth test he had a 30 second lead over long-time rival Russell Bobbitt. The two remained close in times over the next two sections and heading into the final test Bobbitt had only a 9 second lead on Lafferty. On the final test, Bobbitt ended up getting the faster time and the overall win for the day. Lafferty finished an incredible ride and earned 2nd overall, his first podium of the season.
“I am so happy to end my career this way,” stated Lafferty. “Of course, I would have liked to win the race but I’m happy that if I had to lose it, that it was to Russ (Bobbitt). I want to thank my team and my family for everything they have done for me in my career and their incredible support in this final race. I’ve been very fortunate to have a career last this long and it has only been possible with the help of those around me.”
