Factory FMF/KTM Team rider Kailub Russell took the win at the tenth round of the GNCC Series in near perfect conditions for the Unadilla course to strengthen his championship points lead.

Russell did not get the jump he wanted off the start line and came around the first corner in 15th position. He spent the first two miles of the course charging through the pack and found himself in the lead by the time the riders entered the motocross track. From there he began to stretch his lead. At one point in the race he had over a minute lead on the rest of the field. Unfortunately, a large amount of lappers interfered in the second half of the race and Russell lost time trying to maneuver around them. Despite the challenge of the lappers, he still managed to take his seventh win of the season by 27 seconds over the second place rider.

“I had a lot of fun out here today,” stated Russell. “I am happy I was able to increase my points lead. If everything goes according to plan, hopefully I can be on the top of the box at the next round to wrap up the championship.”

Russell’s teammates Grant Baylor and Kacy Martinez followed suit and also took the win in their respective classes. Baylor won the GNCC XC2 class by over 3 minutes and turned an impressive enough result to earn him 4th overall in the combined scores. He now leads the XC2 class by 29 points.

Martinez, already crowned the WXC champion at the previous round, had a great start and led the race early on. She lost her lead after getting stuck on a hill at the halfway point and began a battle with fellow KTM rider Sarah Baldwin. After a lap of battling, Martinez regained the lead and went on to win the event.

Factory FMF/KTM riders Steward Baylor and Charlie Mullins were on the sidelines at this round recovering from injury. Baylor hopes to make a return at the next event.
