Summary – Side by Side
After a long summer break from GNCC Racing, the Polaris Coastal National Guard Team was anxious to get back on the track for the penultimate round of the series. The Powerline Park course is a favorite of the competitors because it is wide enough to pass and there are fewer chances of bottlenecks. And it has an exciting mix of tight woods, lots of rocks, mud holes and high-speed open field sections.
Both of the team drivers got decent starts, with Scott Kiger completing lap 1 in 5th and William Yokley in 8th. They were being cautious on the opening lap, especially in the very dusty field sections. Midway through the 2nd lap, Kiger ran into a mechanical problem; his drive belt broke. He and his passenger / mechanic released all their safety harnesses, jumped out and proceeded to replace the belt. This is not a quick fix, especially right next to packs of speeding machines.
They managed to get the belt replaced, and after getting back in and all buckled up, they only lost 10 minutes. But even though Scott ran lap times that would have put him on the podium, they were a lap down. Scott said the Polaris RZR XP 900 ran strong and handled great, but just had a bad break, literally!
Meanwhile, William Yokley was picking his way to the front, passing about 2 machines each lap. On the 5th lap of the 6 lap race, he right behind the 2 leaders. He made quick work of getting around them, and once out in front, he set the 2 quickest lap times of all the competitors. William is leading the series points and Scott is 4th .
The final GNCC race is the Ironman in Crawfordsville Indiana on October 26. The Ironman traditionally draws the largest field of competitors and fans of the entire series and is always fun for everyone. We’ll see you there!
