Tuesday, August 27, 2013 | 3:40 PM

Anaheim, Calif. – The GBC Motorsports Heartland Challenge has grown each year since the inaugural event in 2008 to become one of the most prestigious ATV endurance races in America. The 6th Annual Heartland Challenge was marked by the introduction of the Series Challenge class, and more than 120 teams came from 21 states to compete.

GBC Motorsports offered a special promotion for early registration, with prizes including a set of tires and GBC Bucks. Jody Estes of Team MAXC was selected as the winner of the set of tires, and he chose a set of Kanati Mud Hog light truck tires as his prize. Steve Kiggins of Team Kiggins Racing won $300 in GBC Bucks and opted to put the money towards a set of XC-Master tires. Both winners were presented with their awards at the event and walked away happy owners of some new tires.

Adult ATV 10-Hour Challenge

After a quick lunch break and pre-race meeting, the adult competitors prepared their quads for the 10-hour Challenge. With a blast of an air horn the first set of riders raced across the field for a Lemans-style start. Soon there were dozens of ATVs roaring out of the starting area with 10 hours of racing ahead of them.

More than 70 teams competed in the 12 Adult ATV classes that included the new Series Challenge class, two Ironman classes and various team classes. The Heartland Challenge course featured a mixture of tight trails and open fields and was highlighted by the GBC Challenge section, an obstacle-laden shortcut of sorts. When all was said and done, Team IXCR were awarded the title of Series Challenge Champions as trio of riders were awarded a $4,000 payout and the IXCR Series earned a $2,000 payout in the first race for this new class. Kevin Trantham took the $2,500 Pro 4x4 Ironman purse, a worthy reward for 10 hard hours of solo riding. AA class winners Team Woodhead Mafia out of Westunion Marietta, WV also took ATV Overall honors, completing 34 laps less than a minute faster than 2012 champs Team Yamaha.
