Menasha, WI: Luck was finally on the right side of the playing field for Zakowski Motorsports pilot Zac Zakowski at this weekend’s race in Mt. Pleasant, IA for the fifth round of the IATVHSS. While the last few rounds have been plagued with rain and pure mud, the weather looked to be perfect heading into the weekend as everyone loaded up their gear and headed out.
The weekend kicked off with the sun shining for the one hour Utv race with the Zakowski Motorsports / Racing for Mom #990 car of Zac Zakowski lined up on the front row in the Utv Open ranks. After getting a mid-pack start, Zakowski was able to pick off two cars, placing them in 3rd before heading into the tight Iowa woods.
The track was in perfect condition, with a couple intense creek crossings which were sure to make for some interesting racing, as the leaders flew through scoring on the first lap. Zac was hot on the heels of second place trying to make moves to get up to guest racer “Digger” Doug Gust, who was leading the race. After getting around 2nd place, the duo set their sights on 1st place with half the race to go. A battle ensued for the next two laps between Doug and Zac before Zac was able to get around him and take the lead all the way to the checkers, taking the win and the overall.
“This race was huge for us. I can’t say thanks to Turnkey Utv and STM Powersports enough for the setup we have so far. We have taken a stock Can-am Maverick 1000 X-RS with their help and simple bolt-ons, made a winning machine. Heck, it still has stock exhaust on it ha-ha. I can’t wait for the next race and I hope to finally carry some momentum in the Utv ranks and bring this to the GNCC’s.” stated Zakowski after the race.
In the two hour Atv race Zac jumped out to an early race lead, taking the holeshot and putting the hammer down early. Conditions were terribly hot and humid, turning this into a survival race for many. Zac was able to keep his lead and continue to put time in between him and the rest of the field, taking the win and bringing home his first victory since his knee reconstruction.
The weekend was a huge high note, with the team able to take both wins and have some luck finally. Zac is getting closer to 100% with his knee and looks to come back in full swing after the summer break from the GNCC’s. ZMS will still be racing throughout the summer and following the rest of the IATVHSS in hopes of taking home two championships. Stay tuned!
