American Honda/JG Off Road Race Report - Loretta Lynn's

Wednesday, November 7, 2012 | 8:00 AM
(Hurricane Mills, TN) ”“ The American Honda/ JG Off Road crew said goodbye to the 2012 season at this weekend’s Loretta Lynn GNCC, the 13th and final round of the GNCC season.

“While this season didn’t go exactly as planned, our guys put in a good effort,” said team co-owner JT Bennett.  “Racer Productions did a great job putting on a good season, and Loretta’s was another really demanding cross country race. Our guys made it out of the woods healthy, and we’re happy about that.”Â

The Loretta Lynn GNCC saw bike action on Saturday, with ATVs competing on Sunday. Nate Kanney and Scott Grills started the weekend off for the team in the XC1 and XC2 classes. Kanney had a rough start after avoiding the first turn tussle involving Kailub Russell. Despite dusty conditions, Kanney was able to move into 6th place, riding hard to catch up to the leaders. When a fellow rider went down from a hard crash, Kanney stopped to lend a helping hand.

“It was a pretty bad wreck,” Kanney said. “I stayed there for 10 minutes then I rode real slowly with him to make sure he got back in the pits. It wasn’t necessarily what I wanted out of my last race but I got out of there healthy and happy.”Â

When Kanney passed through the finish line, he was able to take home a top 10 finish in 8th, leaving his ranking in the XC1 pro class at 8th as well.

Scott Grills has improved steadily over the season, sticking in the top 5 the last four rounds, including his 5th place finish at Loretta’s.

“The weekend was kind of rough,” Grills, who dealt with too much air in his front forks, said. “It just really made the day hard but I just kept going. I just figured I’d finish out the day and that was it really.”Â

Grills came through in 5th place in the first turn and had worked his way into third a few turns in the track later. But the hotly contested XC2 title would mean that competition on the track would be amped up more than usual in the talented class. Grills held on as Steward Baylor and Andrew DeLong made their way past to catch up to the front of the pack, and Grills would settle for 5th for the day, and 8th in the XC2 class for the season.

On Sunday, Brian Wolf would once again prove that he had the speed in the first lap, as he would recover from a last place start to surge forward into the lead by the end of the first lap. But a series of mechanical issues would take him out of the running for a finish at the last race of the season.

“It was crazy,” Wolf said. “I came into the race so excited.  I had one more chance to make it happen, and it didn’t work so well. It is what it is though.”Â

Wolf secured 9th place in the XC1 ATV standings for the year.
