American Honda/JG Off Road Race Report - Powerline Park

Thursday, October 11, 2012 | 10:00 PM
St. Clairsville, OH  ”“ The American Honda/JG Off Road crew began to wind down the GNCC season with the 11th round, the ITP Powerline Park GNCC, last weekend, but took the opportunity to continue showing potential despite some setbacks.

“ While this weekend didn’t give us the results we all wanted after a successful weekend in Unadilla, the team showed that they’re still going to work hard and stay healthy until the end of the season,” said team co-owner JT Bennett. “We’ll take the next two weeks to get some testing and training done, and come back swinging at one of our favorite events in Crawfordsville.”Â

JG Off Road/FRE/American Honda’s Brian Wolf overcame having a flat tire for most of the race to finish a solid 5th for the day.

“I was third going into the woods, and worked my way up into the lead early on,” Wolf said. “Walker and I went back and forth a couple of times but I got a hole in my front tire and it went flat. I kept going and fell back to 5th and was able to have a pretty good battle with McClure. I just couldn’t fight the flat tire the whole race.”Â

Wolf is now tied for 7th in the end of the year point standings with Kevin Yoho.

Sunday’s bike race would be a rainy affair and the hard-packed Ohio terrain would be slick. Normally the conditions the JG Off Road crew favors, native Ohioan Scott Grills took advantage. Grills would move up from a mid-pack start to battle with Andrew DeLong for the second time in two races. Grills kept his pace up behind DeLong until they caught up to Steward Baylor and Jedidiah Haines to battle until the end. Grills would finish just 8 seconds out of a podium position in fourth.

“I felt pretty good this weekend,” Grills said. “I made it in the top 10 overall, and we were all really close out there. I had a great crew at the mud hole and they were able to get me through there every lap. The past two races I’ve been able to hook up with Andrew DeLong. He puts on a harder charger and I just hook on and go.”Â

Grills now ranks 9th in the XC2 Pro Lites Standings for the season.

Unfortunately, Nate Kanney would run into mechanical issues after an outstanding run at Unadilla that landed him on the podium. Kanney’s header pipe came loose early into the race, ending his day.

“When I realized the bolts on the pipe had come loose, I rode back to the truck to fix it, but when I returned I lost so much time I decided to call it a day,” Kanney said.  “On a positive note, this is the first time that they had live stream online with video and audio, and they ended up bringing me in to cohost the show with Rob Buydos. It was a bummer to have a bad race but it was cool to cohost the show and watch live timing and watch Thad [Duvall] and Scott represent Honda.”Â

Jimmy Jarrett would start off strong and halfway through the second lap he was running fourth, but like Kanney, mechanical issues would keep him from finishing the race.

“I could tell something wasn’t quite right,” Jarrett said. “I slowed my pace and when I could tell something was really wrong, I pulled over and checked it out. When I restarted the bike, it wouldn’t move and I realized I had burned up my clutch. It was a real bummer since it was kind of close to home and a lot of my friends and family were at the race.”Â

The JG Off Road Team heads to the Amsoil Ironman GNCC, October 20th-21st.
