The long summer break came to a conclusion with our arrival at the famous Unadilla circuit. A
huge turnout of riders caught the GNCC crew by surprise and the line for signup still extended
half way down pro row by the time the morning race was scheduled to start. They delayed the
start of the morning race 2 hours to get everyone entered and pushed the start of the PM race
back to 3pm.
Off the start I grabbed the hole shot and led the first lap. The mud hole and creek section that
had everyone concerned was fine that first lap but it was a different story when we came
around the second time. There were bikes stuck everywhere in bottomless ruts and
bottlenecks. I chose a bad line and lost some time, dropping back to around 5th I think.
Everyone seemed to have problems in this section at some point in the race. The order
changed often and I think it was a result of how tough this section was to get through.
After the gas stop the pack at the front seemed to settle with Charlie Mullins out front, Thad
Duvall was second, Kailub Russell in third with me in fourth. I could see Kailub and Thad with
Charlie not too far ahead of them. The order got another shuffle when Charlie had bike
problems and dropped back. Kailub had his problems in the mud holes and lost some time. I
pulled up to Thad with a couple laps to go and took the lead. Feeling good I was comfortable
up front but Thad was also riding good and kept the heat on. He retook the lead when I took a
bad line up a rocky hill just before scoring. The race was on for the win on the last lap.
Unfortunately less than a mile into the last lap I hit a rock in a rut the smashed my rear brake
lever off. Thad steadily opened a gap and rode it in to take his first win. We had opened up
about 2 minutes on third so I was able to complete a lap and not lose any positions.
