With the first round bad start in the back of my mind I wanted to prove how good the new KX is at starting. With the wave of the flag the Kawie fired right up and shot me to turn one in record time, taking the hole shot and control of the race. I led the first mile then Josh Strang shot past on a better line. I followed him for the first lap. On the second lap Charlie Mullins came past both of us and upped the pace of the race. The race was on!! My teammate Jimmy Jarrett soon joined us and took a turn in the lead. We all began swapping positions and trying different lines around some of the various mud holes and rutted sections. We came in for gas and a lightning fast stop by the pit crew sent me back out onto the track in 2nd. I caught Jimmy again and moved by and began building a lead. There seemed to be a lot of lapped traffic on the track and I had a couple of altercations that tested my patience. One guy crashed right in front of me and I had no where to go colliding with his bike and going down as well. On the same lap one guy moved over nicely for me only to drop back into the same rut as me right as I was passing, we came together hard and the impact almost tore my foot peg off. It was just hanging there pointing at the ground. I could just get my toes on it. I came in for gas on lap 5 and told the crew that my foot peg was done and maybe coming off. I didn't want to stop and change it because I knew it would take a long time as I could see the bracket was bent as well and getting the pin in and out would be a mission. I pushed on doing the best I could and trying to protect my lead.
With a lap to go the foot peg completely came off. My right leg was burning and my left groin was pretty railed from holding my leg up. But I held on and made it to the finish and took the win. I was pretty happy to take my first win and first for the JG Offroad, GEICO, Monster Energy Kawasaki team.
My team mates Jimmy Jarrett and Scotty Watkins rode awesome. Jimmy taking second and Scotty took third in the XC2 class on his KX 250F.
Thanks for the continued support from my great sponsors in America and NZ.
