Another familiar name from the long list of competitors in the College-A class is that of Levi Coen. Going up against some of the toughest competition in the series, Levi has been holding his own even with some struggles in 2013. We caught up with Levi to find out more.
GNCCRacing.com: How's everything going today?
Levi Coen: Hey Jared! Everything's going good. My dad and my buddy JR just finished up the national bike for the second half of the season, and I just got home from a road bike ride with Casey Peters.
Sounds fun! Are you ready to get back to racing this weekend?
I’m beyond pumped to get back to racing this weekend. I’m feeling better than ever and ready to make things happen and see everyone.
So for those who don't know you, tell everyone a little about yourself.
Well, it’s pretty simple really. I’m from Millfield, Ohio, I started racing all the GNCC’s in 2009 and have been to every one of them since. I’ve been lucky enough to end up with two GNCC championships and one Youth Rider of the Year award in 2010.
How did you get into racing?
My parents own Fastraxx Motoplex in Nelsonville, Ohio and my dad works for DirtWurx on the Supercross circuit, so he’s always been involved in racing and got me started when I was about 8.
How has your 2013 season been going so far?
The 2013 season has been one of my roughest seasons yet. About 3 weeks before Florida I got hit by a car and messed my leg up real bad and broke my scaphoid in my wrist. Then right after Big Buck I had a crash at a local race and jacked up my shoulder pretty good, but Stephen Thaxton has got me back to 110% so looking to turn all this bad luck around.
Wow! That’s definitely pretty rough, but now that all that’s behind you, how do you feel coming into the final stretch of the season?
I feel awesome coming into the last few rounds. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been in, and the quads are fresh and working great. So I’m definitely pretty excited to see how everything turns out.
What do you hope to accomplish in the final 4 rounds?
I hope to stay in the top 5 every round and get into that top 3 before the end of the season. Also, a top 20 overall would be awesome.
What will it take to accomplish that?
It’s going to take good starts, no mistakes and hooking up with one of the top guns in the class and pretty much an all-out sprint through the whole race.
What is the competition like in the College A class?
The competition is crazy!! Everyone in the class is so fast, it’s ridiculous. There’s been more than a few races this year where the guys winning the College-A class have beat a lot of the Pro-Am racers.
Do you have any plans for 2014 yet?
Nothing for sure on the 2014 season just yet. I’m only 17, so I have plenty of time in the College-A class if I want to stick around, but I would like to move up and run Pro-Am then shoot for some solid finishes and overall in that class. If I stay in College-A, no doubt that we want nothing less than a championship next season.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
I would love to someday make it to the XC1 class. I mean, I think that's pretty much every GNCC racer’s goal, but it be awesome to make it there with my buddies I’ve grown up racing with.
Alright, that’s all I’ve got for you, so who would you like to thank?
