Shane Watts is not only one of the most recognizable names in GNCC Racing, but also in off-road racing as a whole. Beyond racing, Watts operates the popular “DirtWise” riding schools and has added several other programs for 2014, and has some more big plans as well. We caught up with Wattsy to talk about new programs and get the first scoop on his other big plan for 2014.

GNCCRacing.com: How's everything going today?
Shane Watts: G'day Jared, yeah mate, everything's going great, and as usual we're pretty flat maggot around here with all of the things we have going on!

So we know you stay busy, but how have you been spending the winter?
Basically we go 24/7 all year round, but in the last year or so I've been making a conscious effort to try and spend more time having family time together. Having said that though, our winter has been extremely busy spending long hours implementing and consolidating the multitude of programs that DirtWise consists of.

The DirtWise Schools have been huge, how have those been going recently?
Our schools continue to grow and are only limited by our lack of time and available personnel. Basically we can't keep up with the demand, which is a great problem to have. Others have tried doing schools but for several reasons they have been unable to replicate the huge success of our complete program. It's a satisfying feeling knowing that we can sell out pretty much every school weeks, if not months, in advance. One school last year had 35 people on the waiting list. That's two full schools of students who didn't get to come to that school that time.

And the addition of Jason Thomas definitely has to be a big help to you, doesn't it?
Yeah, Rat Boy is awesome, and is a great fit for our whole operation. The feedback and testimonials that we get for him as a DirtWise Instructor are phenomenal. Not only has he given us the chance to help satisfy some of the school demand, and also provided me the opportunity to stay at home on some weekends for some family time while he produces income for us, but he has also allowed us to start and grow our DirtWise Race team. He’s a great asset for us, just as we are for him.

You've got some new programs in place this year. First off, tell us about the "Ready to Race" Program.
Our Ready to Race program provides the most cost effective way for an off-road enthusiast who doesn't live close to a GNCC event to go race it by renting one of our fully prepped race bikes for only $600. That’s such a bargain! We've already taken 14 individual race rental deposits for bikes up until summer break, so the whole deal is going gang busters for us already. We pretty much expected that though because of our price point, plus because of the presence and recognition that both Jason and myself have not only in the key markets worldwide, but also out on the west coast and in Canada. You need the complete package to make a new initiative successful.

So that sounds like it could be huge for someone who would like to fly to a race that's a little too far than they would normally travel!
That’s exactly who has and will be predominantly signing up for this opportunity on a one-off per race basis, but we also do have our first rider who is about to sign up for the whole season. Being able to just arrive at the track and go race is going to be a huge benefit to his results and overall enjoyment.

What about the Full Factory Rider Training Program? Whats that all about?
Our Full Factory training gives just three highly motivated riders the chance to maximize their race results like no other opportunity can provide, focusing on a dedicated one-on-one skills training program and overall race preparation mentoring.

What do you think students would learn the most from that program?
Full Factory will provide all of the keys to success for those that want it, and already we have Jeremy Randolph signed up for the full season, so we're stoked to work with him and provide him with the tools to get the best results possible. It will be a totally comprehensive program which will outline all of the secrets that the pros use with their riding skills, race strategy and management, mindset, physical conditioning, practicing methods, and much more. Between myself and Jason we have the most knowledge and experience out there that is available to any riders that want to short track their learning and fast track their improvement. I've been there before and know how hard it is and how long it takes to learn all of the necessary things to be as successful as possible.

And of course, you've still got a full schedule of Dirt Wise Schools lined up as well.
Yep, as many as we can squeeze in to help satisfy the demand, but even then we can't get enough schools scheduled in to please everyone and every location.

So that's 3 big programs for you guys. Do you have any other big plans for 2014?
Well, as you know, we also have our Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise KTM Race team which is a full time job for me all by itself. For 2014 we have Jason Thomas, Rory Mead, and Jesse Groemm, which means we have expanded from one rider and one series in 2013, to now being three riders covering three separate National series in 2014. We’re expecting those three riders to really smash it this year. We've seen a huge increase in our 2014 budget allocations from our team sponsors due to all of the very effective marketing initiatives that we implemented during 2013. We don't like to be complacent with our marketing efforts and the returns we provide our sponsors, instead we pride ourselves on being very proactive and by generating exposure well above and beyond what is expected for all those involved with us. So, to keep with that theme we're going to the next level of promotions in 2014 by now having the "Getting DirtWise" web series, which actually has Episode 1 going live today, and it will not only showcase the inner workings of the DirtWise Race team, but also my intention to return to the Pro ranks and have another crack at going for the Overall victory at a GNCC!

Wow! So on top of all of this, you're planning on returning to the racing side as well!
Yeah mate, that's the plan and I've been head down and [butt] up for about the last month trying to get my body back in shape and my conditioning back to where it needs to be.

It's been a little while since we've seen you in competition. Off the top of my head, I last remember you racing a GNCC in the morning race at Steele Creek in 2010. What brought on the decision to make a return?
And I snagged the win at that race I must say, but that's not much of a claim to fame I suppose (laughs) I think I actually did some National Enduros in 2011, plus a few other regional races along the way to now. There's quite a few reasons on why I'm wanting to have another crack, too many to list here though, but mainly because I have full belief and knowledge that on the GNCC trails, I am equivalent in speed to the top podiums guys, although I must admit that those guys are really ripping nowadays. With some prep work, my ability to ride a dirtbike through the bush really fast is not an issue, the biggest question mark will be me overcoming a battered body and getting the adequate time to work on my conditioning due to having to spend the necessary time to fulfill my obligation to our team riders, schools, and other programs to make them as successful as possible. The plate is full at DirtWise, and whether I personally win or lose at these races, it's going to be a huge year for DirtWise.

So what do you hope to accomplish when you make your return to the track?
Truthfully, the main thing that I want to accomplish is to just ride really good, to be in the zone, to feel the magic again, and not just for a corner or two like I can while doing demo's at our DirtWise schools, but for a significant amount of distance and just string it all together. Winning or placing well would be just a bonus and ultimately I don't even really care about that because that's just for bragging rights. But feeling the magic, being effortless, hitting all of your lines perfectly, and having that ultimate flow at a high speed, oh, now that's something that is real special. The top guys know exactly what I'm talking about and that is what I miss the most from these last 7 or so years since I stopped racing professionally and also basically stopped riding as well.

I’m not fast enough to feel effortless but I still know exactly what you mean by feeling the magic! Well, before we wrap this up, who would you like to thank?
You know what, my wife Carrie is pretty bloody awesome! She continues to make a heap of sacrifices for the success of DirtWise and she is the glue that keeps it all together with her technical prowess and ingenuity. Other programs and companies would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get done what she makes happen for us basically for free. She really is something special. The team sponsors of our Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise KTM Race team are also very important to us, along with our three team riders. However though it is the off-road enthusiast out there that means the most to DirtWise because they are the ones who have made us so successful, they are the ones that so easily connect, relate, follow, and invest in our DirtWise programs because they realize that ultimately those of us at DirtWise are just exactly like them except we just start on the front row and ride a little bit faster out there on the track than what they do.
