Snowshoe GNCC Youth ATV Race Report
Parker Henderson Overall Winner at Snowshoe

The AMSOIL Snowshoe GNCC, round eight of the 2019 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series presented by Specialized, an AMA National Championship, took place on June 22nd and 23rd. Snowshoe is undoubtably the most difficult race in the entire series for the adults, but for the youth riders it is instead one of the fastest. They bypass most of the tough sections, which is probably for the best, as these sections can be a handful even for the adult riders.

Parker Henderson earned his first youth overall win and YXC1 Super Mini Sr. class win of the season at Snowshoe.

This round is also one of the most picturesque; as it is hosted by the Snowshoe Mountain ski resort, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain scenery. The village is beautiful as well, and the race begins with a unique live-engine start through the main street of the resort. The asphalt road is by far the smoothest thing riders see all day –  even the faster youth track is pretty rocky.

Unlike the adult riders, the youth classes only run one of the loops. The loop they run is the one on the west side, which is much easier than the east loop, and they also bypass the toughest sections on the west side as well. After everything was cut out, the course for the youth ATV riders was 4.2 miles long, according to the track map. Of the 71 riders entered in the youth ATV race, Parker Henderson was the overall winner, with the Stewart brothers, Cooper and Charlie, rounding out the podium.

Damien Hawkins was off to what appeared to be another fantastic ride, putting thirty seconds on the other riders in the first two laps. However, those were the only two laps that he was able to complete. Cooper Stewart, hungry for another win (his last was in Florida at round one) took the lead after Hawkins went out. Parker Henderson was right on his tail though, and also hungry for his first GNCC win of the season. Stewart was only able to hold him off for a couple laps. He stayed close behind the rest of the race but was never able to pass Henderson. Henderson now sits second place in series points, only one point out of the lead. Carson Collins rounded out the YXC1 podium, but just missed the overall podium. He finished nearly a minute ahead of third-place YXC1 rider Morgan Johnson, but over three minutes down from the rest of the podium.

Shayne Crull had the early lead in YXC2, but would fall back to fourth in the class.

Shayne Crull took an early lead in the YXC2 class, leading the first three laps, although less than sixteen seconds separated the top three riders. On lap four both Tyler Cox and Charlie Stewart were able to make passes on Crull, with Cox taking the lead. The following lap, Crull slipped back into fourth, moving Nicholas Dearing into the final podium spot which is where both riders finished out their day. Two laps later Stewart was able to pass Cox, and held on to first through the checkered flag.

When asked about his race, Stewart told us “I’ve always liked Snowshoe and this year I felt like ti was going to be a great year on the mountain and it was! The track was perfect and I got first in my class and third overall for the second time this season.”

Charlie Stewart came through third overall and earned the YXC2 Super Mini Jr. class win.

The overall non-YXC rider in the ATV youth race Andrea Rodgers (YAM) racing in the Girls (8-15) class. She placed 15th overall.

The next round of the 2019 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series will take place on July 6 and 7 in Dilliner, PA with the High Voltage GNCC. ATV and Micro racing will take place on Saturday while Bike racing will take place on Sunday.

Morgan Johnson finished sixth overall.
